All out tank - For your amusement

Description
This team is absolutely brutal, but should be stacked for the future. Next 3-4 years are used to ramp up young talent. Window opens in 4 years when all the dead money comes off the books.

This is mostly just for laughs. Clearly this won’t happen, but I’ve never explored an actual all out tank. What else would you like to see if the wild went scorched earth?

Taxi Squad wins the Calder Cup as a poetic little precursor of what’s to come.

Oh my gosh

The kaprizov trade tho 😵

That's like 1/3 of his value at 50% retained

Kassian is significantly negative value

Holloway was carried by Caufield this season

Bourgault is good but not highly valuable

Their '22 1st pick with Kappy is easily 30th

Kaprizov likely takes the best russian player alive mantle after the kucherov generation moves into their 30s and before matvei michkov likely takes it

Best russian player alive = ratified air

That's a horrible deal for NJ who's range of outcomes could include a top 6-7 pick and Mercer is basically untouchable.

3 1sts cannot be 1/3 of the value, as that would suggest his value is 9 1sts. I get that you’re being hyperbolic, but it’s not the easiest valuation to settle on. Is it light? Probably. But I did a similar proposal earlier that had an added 2nd and got some pushback.

What do you think his actual value would be at 50% retained?

It’s not horrible for NJ. There’s a lot of devils fans that are pretty ok with this concept. May need some tweaking but it’s definitely not “horrible”.

Yeah doesn’t have to be the leafs. Dumba at 3M could be moved easily. I picked the leafs because I see a ton of TOR proposals dumping Miky and Engvall, so I used them to fill out the bottom 6. Don’t really care where he goes.

Holloway carried by Caufield?? tears of joy They didn't even play on the same line, and before he got injured Holloway was scoring at a higher rate than Montreal's diminutive sniper. You aren't "carried" if you're scoring more P/GP than the other guy.

Kaprizov has a long way to go before he's better than Kucherov and Panarin. He's not a kid anymore, he's the same age as McDavid... he's also pretty small, which showed in the playoffs.

While this trade certainly makes the Oilers better this year, it doesn't make them better in the mid- or long-term.

I'm sure there are Devils fans who have no idea what they are talking about but for the Devils to move Mercer who is the right age for this team has a sky high ceiling and plays both RW and Center, both needs, it would take a knock my socks off offer especially since he is about to enter his rookie deal. Fiala also has one year left on his contract and would be unlikely to resign so it's complete nonsense to move our 2nd best prospect and a first that could be a very high one in a great draft year for a rental.

I noted that Fiala would sign an extension per the trade description. I realize this doesn’t happen without an extension. Even so, I can respect if you’d rather hang on to Mercer. May not be the devils, but Fiala would net a 1st and high end prospect if traded. Probably would just need to shop a bit.

Dumba would be the number 1 RD on the depth chart, that statement makes no sense, maybe the leafs dont want to pay for him if they feel ok with their current d, but dumba would be an upgrade all around for the leafs.

The returns on Kaprizov and Dumba are too light. Dumba is worth more than a 1st, although Mikheyev kind of helps with the value. But a $3 million retention for two years is worth significantly more than a 3rd. Same goes for Kaprizov. That's pretty much his value right there (Kassian is a cap dump, tho) but the retention of 3x4 must give us a good asset as well.

he would be their 2nd best defenseman behind brodie. Holl also has great chemistry with Muzzin as a shutdown pair. Not saying Holl is better then Dumba but were not trying to ruin fits.

Yeah that’s fair. It’s all purely hypothetical anyway, and I was more just trying to flush out Kaps value with retention and taking a bad contract back. But I hear ya.

The thought process from an outsider was that if EDM doesn’t accomplish notable success, id have a hard time seeing McD re-sign. And so the window is the next 4-5 years. This trade damages the future but helps quite a bit for the next 3 years. That was my mentality anyway, not saying I’m right.

Bourgault and Holloway are nice pieces but Kirill at 4M for 3 years is gonna cost a lot more than that.

Dumba is worth more than that at a 3M caphit

And I really don't want Poehling tbh. I think the Wild should push for something else if they are to move Greener

How much more are you guys going to get for Kirill? Maybe you can get a Turcotte or Vilardi out of LA, but they're also probably not as desperate for three years of Kaprizov. Even if it is Kaprizov at 4M, you won't get a piece like Lafreniere, Byfield, Zegras, etc for him. Bourgault, Holloway and another 1st is a very solid package. Not many teams have more or would be willing to part with it.

I’m inclined to agree, but where and how are you going to get more? Who has the pieces and willingness to put together a better offer? Maybe LA, but I don’t see them having enough incentive to pay much more.

I don’t think this is going to happen, but in the hypothetical world where Kap is dealt with 50% retained, I’d challenge you to find a better proposal that doesn’t immediately get ripped apart.

I can respect that given Mercers ceiling, ELC and age. But I don’t think the value is bad. Fiala is a 70 pt winger who immediately helps Hischier eclipse 60, and likely also achieve 70 pts on a consistent basis. They have known chemistry and Fiala is still young. It would definitely make the Devils better, but does hinder the future, so I respect the decline. I just think it’s a heck of a lot closer to good value than Devils fans seem to think.

Value is there but that 22 first may still be a high one, you wanna say top 5-7 protected?

Good point, I think top 10 protected is a fair compromise. That still gives MN a very respectable return and keeps NJ protected a bit. Solid suggestion.

If you're going for an all out tank then Spurgeon, Foligno, Talbot, and Hartman need to go too. None of them will be key players in 4-5 years when MN is coming out of a rebuild. Brodin and JEE might be key players in that time but they could be traded or not.
