That won't happen. Carolina have not had a draft where they didn't have a 1st rounder going into it since 2011. They might make a player package offer (Like the Trocheck deal) but this is incredibly unrealistic. It also is a pure rental, something the Canes are publicly against

That’s a lot of absolutist statements for something nobody on this website actually knows for sure. Sure the Canes have historically cherished first round picks but up until the last year or two they weren’t in a position to go out and make big deals using draft capital and prospects. They’re entering a different phase so I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect them to adjust their strategy at this point.

Is it more likely they would target a player with term? Sure, based on their history that is more likely but getting a player of Forsberg’s caliber again fits their new stage even if it’s not something they’ve done previously. Plus could always work out a sign and trade scenario to get that term. Is it more likely they do a “hockey trade”? Maybe - Nino would fit that mold as he’s an expiring UFA but at the same time why not hold onto him and maximize your potential this year by slotting him in at 3rd line? Then use his cap space next year on guys like Necas and Troch.

The canes historically haven’t gone with pure rental players, but again up until recently weren’t in a position to do so where it actually made sense. They haven’t publicly come out and said they will never do a rental so not sure where that came from either.

Tom Dundon has come out publicly and said he dislikes rentals. That is a fact.

They've targetted one player who was a "rental" and that was in the VERY unusual circumstances when both Pesce and Dougie were hurt. They have publicly said they do not like the idea, it's bad asset management

Saying he doesn’t like or prefer that method is different than saying they won’t do it in the right situation (which you essentially proved in your response). Is it bad asset management if they bring on a rental who’s an impact player and puts the team over the top to win the cup?

The description literally says that Forsberg comes with an extension.. read first before you comment ignorant things next time.

& if Forsberg does come with an extension, it costs a hell of a lot more than this. Carolina has held onto top picks for awhile, but if they wanna get over that hump and be a serious contender, moving 1 within 10 years is a very small price to pay. They have the prospects in the system that make their 1st round pick for the next 2 years expendable. If you ever wanna beat the teams like Tampa, the Islanders, etc. then they need to add more scoring. A pick won't help you win while a team is in their most competitive window, an all-star like Forsberg will. So if holding onto 1 top pick is your deal breaker, have fun never winning a cup and watching free agents leave even more because the team doesn't show them that they're willing to do what it takes to win.

I think the majority of the fan base aligns with this. And I’d also imagine the FO is too. Strategies change based on where a team is at. For the last 8-10 years it would’ve been silly for them to move high picks and prospects for rentals or in general impact players bc they were a bad to middling team. As a team enters a contending window their strategy should change, otherwise what’s the point like you said.

The only time he's ever done is is when the alternative was icing AHL defensemen. He's said he won't do it, roughly at the same time he said he wouldn't draft D men in the 1st round.

If you're not willing to change your strategy to reflect where your team is now, that's poor overall management. If a rental (who can always re-sign) puts a team over the edge and wings them a cup, it's not bad asset management.

How often do rentals play a major role in a team winning the cup? Look at Tampa, what did Savard do? Coleman and Goodrow weren't rentals. Before that St Louis, no rentals. Washington, it was the one time they didn't load up. It's becoming more and more evident that rentals don't help without it being a certain situation.

Those teams had made moves over the years to get into a position to not need a rental to push them over the top. I get it, it's not always the right answer but the Canes are in a different situation.

When the Canes won in 05-06 - they went out and got Recchi, Weight and Whitney (who later extended). It depends on the team's situation and make-up. Having one strategy that you stubbornly stick to when every team is in different stages and when you're own team has transformed over the past couple of years compared to the previous 8-10 years is silly.
