Description
At this stage, Yamamoto is worth around 2 years x 1.75M. We all thought Draisaitl and Klefbom contracts at the time were 1M overpayments however were locked in long term. The first year felt like it was overpayment but quickly turned into value contracts. I'd say around year 3 for both, they were bonafide contracts.

Could Yamamoto be the same? Instead of offering 2 years 1.75M, what if we gave him 5 or 6 years at 2.5M? That's solid 3rd line money. And I do think on a Cup contending team, he'd be a 3rd liner.

The risk is that if we bridge him and keep feeding him top 6 minutes, he could turn out to be 2019-2020 Yamamoto who average a point a game. If we give him a long term deal, he could do that at a low cap hit for 5 years.

The incentive for him to sign this now is because 2 out of 3 years, he didn't perform to expectations. So guaranteed money now, plus maybe 750K overvalue for the first year or two.

Also want to add on the lines and PK - he could probably play both special teams given the option but we have so many forwards now that we'd probably run 3 different lines for the PK and he'd be on one of them.

PS: McLeod needs to PK and learn to hit if he's not gonna score points. He did not show me much last year outside of his noticeable speed. 3 hits in 10 games, and I think 1 point. That's not gonna cut it.

I would think Yamo would prefer to bet on himself on a short term deal, try to establish himself as a top 6 F, and then seek much more than that. Just not that often guys who have top 6 potential do this to themselves, more definitive bottom 6 checkers that we have seen sign long-term low-ish cap hit deals (see Sissons, Goodrow etc.)

That said, 6 years at 2.5mil would be an immense steal. We already know Yamo is a middle six player. I have a hard time seeing it getting done.

I wish Yamamoto would sign a 6 year contract for only 2.5M! That’s cheep, but there is no way he is signing that. He will get 1-2 years 1.75-2M. We will sign him…

Right I get that, but we all watched the playoffs. Yes he's tenacious and tries his hardest out there but he does bounce off guys sometimes. 2 years at 1.75M + let's say another 4 year deal after at around 3M (assuming he'll play middle 6 minutes) is roughly 15.5M. Signing a 6 year deal now at 2.5M is 15M. 500K difference in overall value. Money in the hand now is worth more than money in the hands 2 years from now.

I understand, and yes he’s good. The only reason why he bounces off, is because of his size. He try’s his best on both sides, and is good at it. I don’t see him wanting to take that much for long term when there is a chance he can regrow his value, and get more money this year. A lot of players had bad years, and I believe he will want more in a few so he will sign a bridge.

Yamamoto is coming off a bad year and has no arbitration as an RFA, he's getting under 2 million x 2.

Edmonton can't afford 2.5 million for him in the short term.
