Description
Any offer sheet over 10 mil becomes tricky for vancouver because it forces them to bridge Hughes which could cost them a lot in a couple years i think they would prefer to get both locked up on 5-6 year deals, if not longer, with reasonable cap hits. Petterson's comments on wanting to play for a team that will be competitive each year leans me to think he doesnt want to commit long term 5 years brings him to Free agency if he decides he wants to move on.

The trade is an alternative to an offersheet, given what habs would have to give up pick wise they could add a few prospects and make the trade offer to allow them to not have to over pay on the cap hit but instead give up a few more assets.

VAN is going to match anything under the 4 firsts price, and even then they probably match

Hughes probably gets a bridge deal anyways

Vancouver would put themselves in salary cap hell before not matching an offer sheet. Gotta think the only way the Canucks even balk at matching is if the Habs come in with some insane offer sheet around $12M that nets them four 1st Round Picks & would be nearly impossible for them to get under the cap. They would trade players & buyout players before letting either Pettersson or Hughes wear another jersey next season.

I don’t think Peterson is going to take less than 9.5m on a 5-6 year deal anyway. So Vancouver probably matches. I’m also not sure they are willing to trade him either.

Fully agree i dont see any realistic way this goes down and Petterson is anywhere else next year, just have been seeing so many low ball offersheets so figured i would post an alternative. If vancouver did, for some crazy reason, think that they would match an impending offsheet then maybe a trade route could make more sense to bring in more assets on top of the picks, but again i think their only focus is resigning Petterson for sure.

If the Habs have to move salary to make the offer sheet- they have to do that BEFORE the offer, not as part of it, and trading Pettersson would get Benning fired so the chances of him doing this are nil.

Only way to get Pettersson, is a one-for-one equivalent, and that's only if he's willing to sign a reasonable long term deal, just not for the Canucks.
Think along the lines of Heiskanen or Svechnikov, and the odds of that kind of trade are almost zero.

the point was Canadien fans are obsessed with rfas almost solely because Sebastian Aho signed a sheet with them 2 years ago. A point that everyone else seemed to understand

Sure, RFA's werent a thing before Aho lol. Seems fair to lump everyone together instead of actually discussing the post itself.
