Would imagine Fox gets 10m and kings reject that offer. Not getting enough back for Villardi.

Fox should not get $10 mil. He wants the Rangers, he should not be making more than $9.5 mil. If he does let him wait for an offersheet or some crap instead of completely blowing up the cap on a defenseman.

Sure he wants to be there but I’d imagine he wants to get paid too and after seeing Nurse get 9.5 it’s hard to argue he’s not worth more than that. The rags should pony up with guys like him, not give out other bad contracts or trade for other non difference makers who are overpaid.

Handing out multiple $10 plus mil contracts is how you don’t contend. We’ve got Panarin already. Fox should be around $9.25-9.5 mil long term. If Mika wants more than $9 mil I’d let him walk as well. There’s no other way to sign the rest of our young guys and fill out the roster.

Yeah I’m with you but I think you pay the right players. Fox at that contract would be worth it easily still. The problem is contracts oike Kreider, Trouba, Goodrow, etc.

Swap Jones for K'Andre Miller in that return and LA says yes. Otherwise, not a chance.

Players like Goodrow and Kreider and Trouba are worth more in the playoffs and help to survive. Just skill won’t win anything. Ask the Leafs, damn talented, but playoffs are a different animal.

That’s not the argument - they’re all over paid and have way too much term (that’s the bigger problem in Goodrow’s contract). My issue is with underpaying elite and deserving players that aren’t even into their prime just to turn around and give bad contracts out to players that aren’t as effective and are over their prime. I think it’s a poor way to build a team.

Well there’s no way to reverse the past so harping on it does no good. The name of the game is to find a solution and that starts with getting guys to take a little less to improve the overall depth of the team in order to contend.

No you’re right. It’s just annoying that GMs and fans to an extent expect true top tier elite guys to take haircuts bc of front offices inability to assess and negotiate contracts with lesser players. If I’m a player like that I stand pat and ask for my value - I’d be willing to take a “team friendly” deal if I had confidence that the GM would use the money saved on me wisely but based on the majority of the leagues track record that isn’t likely.

This is less about Fox and the rangers and just general observations around the league. Like, I think mcdavid is probably ticked off at this point that he isn’t making what he should be and Holland keeps making dumb moves with essentially his money that get them no closer to true cup contenders.

Yes but that mindset doesn’t work either unfortunately. If everyone took market value rosters would barely be half full. I mean I’m personally not a fan of a cap at all. I get why they do it, but if a team is too cheap to pay players to compete then they simply should not be in the league. I’d have no issue if the league was only 20 teams that were super stacked instead of the crap we see year after year. Ownership issues are pathetic at this level.

I've been saying for a while that there's probably not a trade to be made between LA and NY.

cheaping out on your norris winning defenseman is a wild take my guy. if fox signs for 8 years and takes under 9.5 i’d be stunned.

Well with the logic of some people they wanna just hand out money to everyone who freaking breathes. You don’t win doing things like that. Tampa had no one over $9.5 mil. Chicago never had success once Kane and Toews made $10 mil per. Same with LA once Kopitar and Doughty got big money. Leafs are one of the more talented teams in the league and can’t get out of the first round with multiple $10 mil plus players. Edmonton can barely do anything with two of the most dynamic players cause of the awful team around them. Boston while having a tough time in the finals has done a fantastic job of keeping players with discounts to create a better team overall. Long story short they should do the same with Fox, Laf, Kakko, etc. Don’t bring up contracts already signed cause those are done and can’t be reversed. It’s about cultivating an environment that will have long term success and it takes the majority of guys to buy into this mentality.

That’s fine cause the kings don’t do this trade. So I guess it’s a wash
