I love how people talk about his previous years as if .917 save%, his career high, is some great season.
He was an average goalie that had a down year.
Here is the real thing for him. He's young. Only 22. He's most likely going to get better not worse. Goalies in general are streaky. But Most usually hit their peak later not earlier.
Given that, It's a good deal for the team. Not necessarily for Hart.
For Hart I hate the deal. This walks him to 25. Yes he's still a RFA, but if you do the math on it, 7 or 8 years at 25 puts you at 31 or 32.
In 7-8 years, given the trend, no one is signing a 31-32 year old goalie to big money on Long term. So he's basically cut him self out to 1 deal.
You can see guys like Hotlby having gone through this. You got contracts like Bob that are the lesson on WHY teams won't do that crap.
I think he should have bet on himself here. Taken one year at 22, hoped to play better and then cashed in. He signs a 5-6 year deal at 23, He signs a larger long tern deal at 27-28.
I think that is the more realistic trend for players in his situation.
The fact Philly got a decent cap hit, and the term that hooks him, is pretty telling his agent got took.
