Granted, he had 1 bad year that really killed his numbers, but you have to think less term at a lower price would have been more prudent for both parties.
If you're a team trying to get a deal, you want to walk them to a point where you can get them locked up long term for less than they will be worth.
If you're a player trying to get paid, you want short term after a bad season to raise your value with a better performance, or you want as long a term as possible before your performance declines.
3 years @ $4M isn't a big risk if he goes bad, but that's an extra UFA year or two on the next contract, which could make a significant difference if he performs exceedingly well.
