Description
Just exploring value packages for 3 years of Kap at 3.5M. This won’t ever happen, I’m just playing the hypotheticals game. MIN signs Kap to a 3x7 and retains 50%.

If you see a value that is a way off, provide some feedback. I’m not an expert on your favorite team, so help me adjust.

The idea here is that Kap at 3.5M would generate enormous demand, I could see at least 25 teams being interested at that AAV, if not 31. There would presumably be a bidding war, and the hope is that among those ~25 interested teams, you’d get at least 1-3 GMs willing to overpay. It may not be your GM, but the below packages represent my view of a very solid return in this hypothetical event.

Gotcha, yeah I was very unsure about him. My thought was that you’re getting a much better and younger winger and clearing ~2M to help sign Barkov next year, but I can appreciate if Hornq isn’t a dump. Would you adjust the package or just no interest?

no interest
Lundell is an elite prospect who we have cheap for at least 3 years... Trading cost controlled talent especially when we have a lot of guys to re-sign soon seems like bad asset management
Anyway he's Zito's first ever draft pick and he thinks very highly of him, no way he would trade him

I think all of these are missing a piece for 3 years of a possible top 10 W for 3.5 mil and taking a cap dump. Probably a considerable piece.

Good feedback, i was kind of thinking the same but I really wanted to avoid a bunch of instant no’s that killed any discussion, so I erred on the side of underpay.

Do we think Kaps value is closer to 3 1sts when there’s 50% retained?

Fair enough, I respect the opinion. I do feel like you have your homer blinders on a bit there, but ELCs are massive in an flat cap world so no need to get into it further.

IMO, Kirill is worth 2 high end assets and a mid tier pick on his own. One year of 4 mil in cap space is roughly a 2nd. Cobble that together and I don’t think it’s worth moving him for less, especially with retention. I really think the cap dumps aren’t necessary. A team should be able to make room for 3.5 mil.

I would give salo or bolduc, Holmstrom or bellows and 2 firsts if Leo and hickey go back the other way. That's certainly a better deal than the ones posted here.

From a talent and skill level standpoint, absolutely.

From a, he's played 55 games in the NHL, standpoint. Not a chance. Not yet anyway. We would need to keep him for this upcoming season build up his trade value and capitalize on it next offseason.

We could possibly move him at the draft to snag anywhere as high as 4th overall. Which means we lose out on one of the 3 franchise centers who will all go in the top 3.

Good stuff, appreciate the feedback. My thought with retention is that if we trade Kap, we’re entering a rebuild so the 3.5M doesn’t matter for us. If you don’t retain, there’s maybe 10-12 teams interested, but if you retain then you have 25+ teams interested. Building the demand should lead to a notably better return. That’s the thought anyhow.

Love this type of feedback. I didn’t consider the islanders because I’m admittedly very uneducated on things happening there, but i appreciate you providing a package. After doing a small bit of research, it seems that’s def a better proposal than what’s listed. Good stuff.

And you're getting KAPRIZOV back in the trade. With retention, meaning he's at $3.5M AAV cap hit for THREE years.

Open your eyes. 🙄

Good stuff. Wondered about that myself - keeping him another year to prove out the value and increase it even more. I’ve pondered the idea of playing him and Fiala together all year on the 1st for purposes of blowing up both their values.

The islanders would be a great destination IMO. We need a scorer to play with Barzal and especially someone at that level of play at that cap hit. We don't really have any top assets to give up but we have a lot of pieces that we could give.

If you’re gonna rebuild, you sell now. There’s more downside risk than there is upside reward IMO. The top of the 22 and 23 drafts look great and it allows the kids to fully take over now and hit their primes when we have cap space.

That would be my preference too. IMO keeping them would allow us to be too mediocre for a tank and just pushes the timeline out a year further which isn’t necessary.

He’d be an awesome complement to Barzal. Those two are such one man highlight reels as is, I can only imagine the creativity of them playing together.

I would agree, tank now and move them both if things turn out that way. However, it's a 50/50 route either way.

If we move both now, and tank, we would absolutely be in play for one of Wright, Lambert, or Savoie. But can we really count on the lottery gods to give us that top 3 pick it would take to get any of them? Even with the new lottery rules, we could easily drop out of the top 3 but still be in the top 5 most likely.

If we kept them and allowed them to increase their value and then moved them at the draft, yes we would have a lower draft pick... but... we could also easily move Kaprizov for as high as 4th ova, plus additional assets on top of that, imo. Depending on where his contract falls, Fiala could fetch us anywhere between 7th ova to 15th overall... plus assets.

Either method has it's risks, but both would be profitable if played right. However, neither carries a guarantee. 🤷‍♂️

Not to be disrespectful but wild aren't going to rebuilding with Jared spurgeon, and jonas brodin along with Joel Eriksson Ek contract, etc.. I just shake my head at the pessimism of Minnesota team fans along with idea, thought that a team would be mediocre without seeing them play or final touches to roster

Not a Cats fan but I know if they want to beat Tampa in the playoffs they'll need guys like Horny who can make things happen.
