Could you imagine calling Toffoli a middle 6 player at that salary and production in the past two seasons…

At a first and a third going to Montreal.
You’re gonna have to pay big to get Montreal’s leading goal scorer.

Is there another forward you'd be happy to part ways with here? Anderson or Gallagher?

Anderson is probably the most likely to be moved. KK could be moved but only for Eichel.

Let's go to the numbers:

Last season, he scored 44 points in 68 games, a 53 point pace for an 82 game season. This year he was a lot better, scoring 44 points again but in only 52 games, a 69 point pace in 82 games but that was a definite outlier for him; he's a .59 PPG game player; not bad but compare that to the Avs first line players and their career pace:

MacKinnon - .97 PPG
Landeskog - .74 PPG
Rantanen - .94 PPG

So, all-in-all, it's maybe a bit squishy to call him "middle six" on the Avs but he definitely would be 2nd line though solidly so.

Would love to have him but can't see Montreal making that trade, straight up. Anderson would be great, too, but I'm not sure he fits the Avs style.

Calling him a middle 6 forward there is less to do with my view of him but more to do with Colorado's need of a middle 6 forward. Toffoli is a 2nd line forward which is in the middle 6.

Anderson would be great on the Avs, the man plays north-south and can skate well.

Yeah but look at his goals. He is a sniper so he doesn’t really put up many assists. This past year, he scored 28 goals in 52 games which is a 44 goal pace. I think that is first line worthy on any other team.

Those are both big contracts with terms that the Avs should avoid.

That's the only time he's ever scored like that - he had 31 once with LA in 82 games with his next highest being 24. I mean, he's good and the Avs would love to have him but the first line operates well the way it's constructed. Having a sniper like that would be great for the 2nd line. But, like I said, I don't see the Habs wanting to deal him unless you made a really strong offer.

That was my main point. Toffoli is almost untouchable.

Cool - don't know much about him other than he's a big body. Saw him play a few games in the playoffs and thought he was good. He scores which is what the Avs are going to need and he plays hard-nosed which comes in handy in the playoffs. The term is a concern although I do think the Avs aren't going to retain Bura beyond this season so he isn't much more. With the Cup window open now, I'd trade them Jost, Bowers or Kaut and a 2nd or 3rd. Habs can replace his scoring with Caufield.

Here's the thing, though. If the Habs need a 3C (the premise of the OP), Jost fits that bill and if they can get another prospect (Bowers or Kaut) plus a decent pick (2nd or 3rd), they can replace his scoring with a much cheaper option in Caufield. And it frees up some money as well. Not saying they should do that but that's a decent return for someone who's scoring can be replaced. If I'm Bergy, it's not something I would dismiss out of hand if Joe called.

Anderson especially. I just don't see the same appeal that others seem to with him.

I'd definitely avoid Gallagher. Anderson is a little risky but could bring a dimension the Avs need - a real-deal power forward for the 2nd line to compliment the sniper in Bura.
