That’s not particularly how LTIR works. LTIR is only beneficial in the case of bonuses and rfa’s holding out into the season. The jets won’t have any big rfa’s holding out since both Copp and pionk have an arbitration deadline and the only bonuses really are only if perfetti and or heinola play, which only amount to 1.4ish M so little’s LTIR is enough. This would definitely be valuable for other teams though. That’s my understanding of LTIR at least.

LTIR allows a team to go over the cap by the amount on LTIR. So with Shaw on LTIR, the Jets can realistically spend to $85.4M and be cap compliant.

What you're describing is certainly one way LTIR can be an advantage. Another way is what TOR did with Riley Nash last year. They acquired someone on LTIR at the tdl and he was supposed to be LTIR until the end of the regular season. That in essence created an "LTIR bucket" of cap space to utilize. The issue occurs when the players is projected to come back at some point because then that bucket dissappears and a tram is forced to make a trade to be complaint.

Actually because they have Little they are the perfect team to do these shenanigans. The difference between offseason LTIR and In-Season LTIR is a bit difficult to understand but essentially in when you use it in offseason LTIR you can exceed the cap (in the offseason) by the AAV of that player on LTIR. However, when you use off-season LTIR, you essentially nuke any extra space that you had prior to putting a player on.

In the case of the jets, should they be over the cap by 3-4 million, they could acquire shaw’s rights and offseason LTIR it so they are cap compliant for day 1 of the season. On the first day they can put Little on LTIR and have his full LTIR cap hit to have cap space in season.

I understand all that; but the jets will not be exceeding the cap since their RFAs will be moved or signed well before the season starts and even if they aren’t, there’s no reasonable way they exceed the cap by more than littles 5+ M

I suppose that depends on what happens next…
