Description

I think this team could still add someone significant. Zucker/Pettersson/Matheson have all been in rumours. I think Pettersson is the easiest to move, and we already have a replacement for him in POJ.
I make this trade with ARI because Lyubushkin is a great 3rd pairing dman who is a righty. He is a big physical guy, so he can slot in well next to POJ, who could do really well with a physical dman to help him out. The Pens also add a pick. Arizona adds Pettersson to have a young top 4 core that can grow together (Chychrun, Pettersson, Soderstrom and Timmins).
With the remaining $3.4M, I think the Pens target another top 9 forward. The main option is Tatar, if he is willing to sign for cheap. If not, you can take a chance on someone cheaper like MoJo, Parise, Bozak, etc.
The options to upgrade in nets arent really there, so I would hold out for now and see how these guys perform. If a trade needs to be made in-season, you make it. If not, you run with it. I think MAF is a serious contender to sign with us next offseason.

That trade definitely makes sense for the Pens and at one point probably made sense for AZ, but with them picking up Ghost I don't know that Pettersson makes any sense at this point unless the Pens pay AZ to take him which we all know Hextall is not willing to do.

Defo thought about that. However, Pettersson is 25 and Ghost is 28. I think they are hoping Ghost can bounce back and they could flip him. Also, I feel like all those dmen, including Ghost, are very offensive minded, whereas MP is more defensive, which helps them. If anything, I would be okay with trading MP to another team that may have interest: ANA, LAK, COL, BUF, DET, MTL... and then either get someone back from their team who is cheap, or sign an FA like Demers or Murray.

I don't think AZ is interested in Ghost finding his game. Taking Ghost gave them some serious assets and probably the only benefit they'd have if he did bounce back is being able to flip him for more futures. AZ definitely seems more focused on loading up on picks/prospects to help their rebuild vs. icing a good team. My major concern right now is that Hextall dropped the ball on moving Pettersson. Teams that needed LD's seemed to have shored them up already. Out of the teams you mentioned I could see ANA being the only realistic team at this point, but who knows right now, this off-season has been super whacky.

Matheson probably slots in next to Lyubushkin and POJ next to Marino. Matheson-Marino was a dumpster fire last year. No reason to believe it’d be different this year. Matheson did best next to Ceci and Lyubushkin is closer to Ceci. POJ was at his best next to Marino.
