How does even think this offseason went for them?

To me, I kind of like it. It could go 2 ways: one, the players they got work out and the leafs are a better team, or two, they could fail, but I think it's more likely they hit.

Risky offseason but has a lot of potential.

Losing Hyman hurts but we were able to get Kampf + Kase + Ritchie at a combined AAV of $5.25 compared to Hyman's $5.5 and without having to commit to more than 2 years in term

It's not over yet. Still a couple of questions before the season:

-The big one is the future of Morgan Rielly. Speculation from reporters has indicated the Leafs are looking at two options: sign an extension this offseason or trade this offseason. Dubas has seemed to hitch his wagon to the four forwards, so that makes Rielly the only real major trading piece Toronto has to work with. If neither an extension or trade happens before the season begins, it would be a disappointment.
-Who will be shipped out in the bottom six, if anyone. Currently, the options the Leafs have are: Mikheyev, Kampf, Kase, Engvall, Simmonds, Spezza, Gabriel, Brooks, Semyonov, Robertson, Anderson, Amadio, Seney, Malgin and possibly Ho-Sang has candidates for those six positions. Some of these guys didn't sign to play for the Marlies so the Leafs may be looking at trading away a few of them, possibly to Detroit to the ire of their obnoxious ACGM fans.

As for what's already been done, I think this offseason so far has been entirely average. Losing Hyman sucks, but a 29 year old player with 2 knee injures for 8 years just isn't a wise investment of money. Same goes for Foligno and Andersen. Bunting is a fantastic signing, Mzraek is a decent goaltender, Kampf and Richite are great bottom-six options and Kase is an interesting signing; essentially a gamble on someone who can produce with low minutes.

The Leafs have their work cut out for them this season. They decided getting through the playoffs the easy way wasn't palatable so I hope they enjoy doing it the hard way.

Oh wow I didn't realize Kampf+Kase+Ritchie is cheaper than Hyman.

Forgot about the Rielly scenario. That could make things tricky for the leafs. At this point I honestly dont know if Id rather trade or resign him.

Why trade him? Leafs are in a win mode. Contenders just don't trade upcoming UFAs. Now I don't think the Leafs should resign Reilly either. Teams will overpay for him.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to keep him and burn off a year of his contract. It makes more sense from a value standpoint to replace him with someone with a longer contract.

By not having done some homework on whether it's feasible to sign Rielly to an extension, Dubas has put himself in a precarious position.

The team is in win now mode but Rielly may disagree with what he feels he deserves vs what the team thinks he deserves.

The big question here is regardless of how you feel about Rielly personally, how do you trade him knowing the minutes he plays while having a defense that can help with the win now mode this team is on.

This is tricky and I don't like it much.

Some thoughts.

My wishes for the next season were that:
1. the Leafs manage to design a good shutdown 3rd line, one that the coach will trust in the playoffs.
2. Bogosian be re-signed or someone found to replace him.
3. Keefe avoids playing Matthews/Marner 25 minutes a game, and maybe removes Marner from the PK altogether.

What I got so far:
1. My favourite acquisition is Kampf. I overlooked that player, and it seems like a legit Moneypuck move. Played tough minutes in Chicago, with DZ faceoffs, turning in excellent defensive stats on an average team. Him and Mikheyev (and maybe Kerfoot) could be the basis for an excellent 3rd line, like Tampa's Gourde line. So, I'm rather satisfied, though I wouldn't mind an additional PK specialist/defensive forward.

2. Bogosian leaving for a mega-contract in Tampa is a big issue, imo. I don't see the replacement for what he brought last season. Our top 4 is good, but needs to be used wisely. Then there are injuries. And who plays on the PK aside from Muzzin-Holl? I don't hear that a lot, but my move right now would be to trade a contract (e.g. Kerfoot) for a good defenseman. Defense wins championships.

3. Point 3 is entirely up to the coach. Hard match a checking line against opponents at home. Break up Matthews and Marner if they are cold. Play Nylander more if he's hot.

Unlike most people on social media, I'm not too worried about the top 6. Any player would score 40+ points with Matthews and Marner. I like Ritchie there, to protect the other two. Ritchie, Bunting, Kerfoot, Robertson, Simmonds... Kase. There's a lot of options.

If we dont trade Rielly, we are putting ourselves in the same spot as we did with Hyman.

It is best to get ahead of this and not repeat this mistake.

Yes we are contending now so we need to add externally while and subtracting Rielly.

I think overall we got better defensively in out bottom 6, it also looks like we got quite worse offensively.

Like alot worse, hopefully I'm wrong.
Bottom 6 FW offense will be worse I feel.

Here is how I sum up the offseason

Dubas went to the Casino and Gambled

Everyone picked up is a gamble.

But still there were some pretty good choices

Now as for Rielly from what I know Dubas is working on an extension with his agent. If a deal cannot be worked out by the end of August he will be moved. Basically they want to move him before the season starts. Honestly on the Rielly watch pay particular attention to Pittsburgh and Seattle

For Bogo leaving there is a FA still available that can replace him. Jason Demers. Also leafs defense was not the problem that playoffs. The problem was Matthews and especially Marner did not show up. The killer instinct was not there and they let games 5 and 6 go in OT from simple mistakes and decided to not play in game 7. Would not be concerned for it as the new defensive coach we got should significantly improve things like he did in Carolina.
