Why don't the Bruins just trade for Eichel instead?

1. division rival, Pegula is on record saying he will only trade him out west
2. Boston doesn't have the assets (without gutting important roster players)

Huh? BUF is the only team who has to figure out the pieces here. BOS and CGY get one player back each. + BOS does not have the assets to trade for Eichel, or the cap space to make it work.

The word is BUF wants a big package of young assets. That's what's happening here. They get more than four 1st rounders in value (1st + 1st + Dube + Zary), plus they get a couple players for cap purposes who could also get flipped for assets at the trade deadline. This isn't a complicated structure. And in fact, the more you look at things, the more it makes sense for the Eichel trade to be a 3-way deal.

CGY wants to move on from Monahan...BUF is handcuffed and needs to trade Eichel for the best package available...and BOS needs a 2C to replace Krejci's gaping hole.

Not saying it doesn’t make sense. Saying an 11 piece trade is incredibly unlikely.

It’s not really that complicated. It’s just taking the Monahan+Zary+Dube+1st offer that everyone seems to agree is around fair value for Eichel, throwing in a conditional pick because GMs love those, then taking out Monahan to trade him somewhere else and substituting all of those assets into the trade instead. It’s actually incredibly simple lol

I don’t like losing Dube but I like this trade, Calgary would need a third line RW

Seems like Treliving and Sutter are very confident that Pitlick will take that spot at 3RW.

Maybe you're referring to 3LW. In which case, yup. But assuming Pelletier doesn't make the team, then you would have $1.0-1.25M in cap space to sign a depth LW while keeping Lucic at 4LW.

It's tough to make a 2 way trade never mind a 3 way. But you seemed to have done it. Well thought out. Congrats.

This is literally way less complicated than Duchene and EK65. Concept is 100% realistic, only question is on the value

Pitlick averaged 2nd line minutes over the last 3 years and has a very strong defense game. Its like adding Frolik from his good years

It’s certainly A LOT of pieces
Only Zary is high end though imo, so it’s possible it could get beat - especially if a team like LA, Minny or the Ducks decide to get serious

I wouldn’t be too upset if this were the deal that ends up happening though

I’d prefer the 3rd team wasn’t Boston though….

Bruins fan here; I like it. We're giving up what Monahan would cost in a 1v1 trade, essentially just using it as a sweetener for CGY to entice BUF on an Eichel trade and help clear some cap for CGY. We obviously need help down the middle with Krejci leaving. I dont know if I can see Coyle stepping up. Thing with BOS is Don Sweeney is obsessed with internal competition and hoarding our prospects. And I personally think they try to play it out using a mix of Haula, Coyle, Studnicka at 2C before they even think about reverting to a trade. But I'd be glad if this happened for everyone. Eichel finally gets out of BUF, BOS gets their 2C, CGY gets 1C and BUF gets A LOT of futures and some young talent who can contribute right away.

@Ledge_And_Dairy That would be quite the return for Eichel.
If I could make one change make it a 2022 second.
Then the Sabres have six picks in the first rounds next year.
The Flames are still giving up a lot to get him.
Monahan, Sean traded to Boston for players and picks
Dubé, Dillon [RFA Rights] third line center
Zary, Connor high potential of being a top six center
2022 1st round pick (CGY) should be among the last 8 in the draft.
2023 2nd round pick (CGY) so should be nearly a third.
Sabres get two players who would be in the line up next year, Dube and DeBrusk.
Two more prospects who could see action the following year, Vaakanainen and Zary.
For that return, I could see the Sabres holding some of Eichel's salary.

You got that right.

It’s certainly A LOT of pieces
Only Zary is high end though imo (this is true but there are two other first round picks, Dube and Vaakanainen, while DeBrusk may find more scoring opportunities in Buffalo as well), so it’s possible it could get beat - especially if a team like LA, Minny or the Ducks decide to get serious

I think Boston would be helping Buffalo more than Calgary is helping Boston.
This is a fair return for Monahan:
DeBrusk, Jake underperforming LW
Moore, John IMO a cap dump
Vaakanainen, Urho former first round pick not a huge asset
2022 1st round pick (BOS) Most likely one of the last 8.

One of the best returns for Jack Eichel IMO
