Just proves to everyone saying Columbus didn't pay their players because they were too expensive wrong. The real reason they didn't sign them is because their players didn't want to be there.

Don't forget the Rangers, with Adam Fox due a new contract after this year.

Honestly I don’t think this affects Fox much, maybe it raises the price by $500K or so. The Makar contract helps to neutralize this a bit.

Next year I think this could increase what Charlie McAvoy makes more than Fox. (Although there is the Boston factor where everyone takes less if they want to stay there, so he might end up closer to $8 or even $7 million on his next contract)

I would expect Fox to be third unless he takes a bridge deal, but Heiskanen and Makar didn't so

Definitely.

It's clearly a high cap hit, but look at the others.

1. Erik Karlsson - $11,500,000 - never worth it
2. Drew Doughty - $11,000,000 - not worth it.
3. Zach Werenski - $9,583,333
4. Seth Jones - $9,500,000 - he's not as good.
5. Roman Josi - $9,059,000 - signed when 30, runs till he's 38...ouch.
T-6. Dougie Hamilton - $9,000,000 Already 28, runs till he's 34. That's not really idea.
T-6. Cale Makar - $9,000,000 - young Dman, probably the only real comparable here.

I honestly think the only one even comparable on this list is Makar. They won't be paying Zack into his 30s.
Would I like to see 2 more years on this deal. Sure would. But his odds of getting another pay day at 32 are a lot less than at 30. Which is where the player is at.
There has to be a give and take here. CBJ is gonna get his best years, and the cap hit is high, but he's a good defenseman.
Truth is if you want to go around passing blame on this, look at Dubas.
These TOR fans on here whining about Reilly. Well your **** GM was the one handing out huge deals to RFAs to start this mess. If you want to complain look in the mirror.
Dubas has been the worst GM in NHL history. He was a noobie fool who got took by players and agents, his lack of skill and brains has hurt every GM and team in the league.

It’s most definitely a high AAV, but it feels partially like a “eat ****, Jones” signing.

He just turned 24. His defensive game has improved every season, and he’s been 3rd in the league (anongst D) in goals since he arrived. Last season was the only time injuries limited him (during a year when, let’s face it, CBJ were simply rushing to get to the end).

With this year, they’ve got him for seven years, all of which should be his prime. It’s different compared to Doughty, Karlsson, Josi, et al., who signed their extension at 28+, and will be carrying those cap hits until they are nearly 40. Even Jones is near three years older.

Werenski is now going to be paid more than Roman Josi.

Think about that.

Columbus shouldn't have to pay a premium to have its star players stick around.

But I guess that's reality.

I voted no frown

They already had to trade buchnevich for pennies on the dollar they're going to have some cap gymnastics. I believe zib is a Ufa after this year too

Yup. Which really sucks when you think about it. At least it's not the NBA where no matter how good or bad they are players want to go to Miami, la and New York.

The NHL’s highest AAV for defensemen: (as of 2022-23)

1. Erik Karlsson - $11,500,000
2. Drew Doughty - $11,000,000
3. Zach Werenski - $9,583,333
4. Seth Jones - $9,500,000
5. Roman Josi - $9,059,000
T-6. Dougie Hamilton - $9,000,000
T-6. Cale Makar - $9,000,000

It's interesting how the most consistent and solid defensemen sign for so much less than they should. It's almost as if their AAV represents their character more than their skill.

It is a most definite bummer that Duchene, Bobrovsky, and Jones all got away with those contracts.

If only CBJ could’ve had the honor of taking on those anchors 😩

I like this. The cap hit is high, but that's what you pay for when you sign a guy through his prime years.

Boston hasn't really forced bargains on players so much as signing players to long term right before they broke out.

Marchand was a 25-30 g/60-65 point player in his late 20s, signs this deal and turns into a 40g/90 point player at like 29. That's atypical.

Pastrnak I believe was like. 30/60 guy, signs and becomes a perennial rocket contender.

Bergeron was already a stud, but I believe signed his contract north of thirty so there was assumption he'd decline keeping his aav down and he just isn't declining. The rest of his draft class (Getzlaf, e Staal, m Richards, Carter, Parise, Perry, etc) all have declined but he's just keeping on rocking it.

Rask was one of the highest paid goaltender when he signed.

Krejci was highly paid

Etc

Also all there long term deals for their core were done before Kane, Toews, McDavid and then the leafs blew open contracts. Before that Getzlaf/Perry in the 8s and Benn at 9 something were the top (Ovi is on his own level)

Weresenki is a great player but I feel like for this type of cap hit you should be looking to max out the years. At least it's through his prime and they're not paying him for past play in his 30s.

Pittsburgh gave Crosby and Malkin nearly 30% of the cap off of their ELCs. I understand that you're upset someone like Dubas got a job in the NHL because you're intimidated by people who are younger than you and wear glasses, but he didn't invent playing RFAs high salaries.

Besides this is a contract after a bridge. The point is moot.

I saw the Jones deal in CHI and said “I don’t see Werenski getting that much”

And he got more. I still have a lot of faith in Jarmo but sheesh.

In that sense CBJ were lucky they aren't a very desirable location. They tried to match the Duchene contract for sure but he wanted Nashville instead. They probably would have matched the Jones contract too looking at this contract.
