Burns is 36 years old making 4 x $8,000,000 You'd have to pay us big time to take on that contract. Detroit's getting younger not older.

C'mon now...you gotta know by now Devils aren't touching that.

We would offer a little more than what we'd offer for Tarasenko...but not much.
Kuokkanen, Boqvist, Thompson, guys like that...plus a pick or two.

Gotta pay Detroit to take Burns, he's just not needed there. Maybe another team is willing to pay with half his salary retained but not Detroit.

Burns + a 2nd for Stecher? Burns isn't bad, he's still excellent at driving play on a very bad Sharks team the last two seasons.

He won't be bad for at least two more seasons unless there's a major drop off in his play. Can help bring in that veteran presence in the backend of a young DET team and also help DET stay on the cap floor. He's not an anchor or anything, he's just expensive.

Tbf, I'm taking your guys' words with a little more bit of salt after you guys were adamant about having no need for Hamilton and then NJD proceeded to do what I predicted and sign him.

Like I don't think Burns is awful, but paying him that much for that long could actually hurt the team in the future. Even getting a second in a good draft I don't think is enough. I just don't see a fit with Detroit, like I said a team trying to compete might be better off with him. Maybe a deal to retain salary would be feasible, with SJ retaining half, trading to Detroit retaining half then going to a team that's competitive. Between burns, Karlsson and Vlasic I don't see those contracts going anywhere anytime soon.

None of us are GMs. This is all guessing. We should be taking every single AGM with a grain of salt.
I think the point we're trying to make is that we value Severson and Holtz's future more than the package being offered - even if the value is close.

I don't know that any Devils fans said we have no need for Hamilton.
We did say we didn't think we would get him.

I don't see how that would project to Fitzy making a made trade like this one.

I've consistently seen Devils fans mention they don't need Hamilton on this site. Here's an example just from a roster I made a while back: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2444180.

It projects because Devils fans (IMO, and the Hamilton turn of events supports this) tend to undervalue what guys like Hamilton/Meier can bring to their team and NJ management's recognition of this. The fact that I've seen deals centered for Meier around Butcher (who you had to pay to get rid of...) Foote and a 2nd speaks to this too.

I don't speak for all Devils fans obviously...but we clearly needed another top-4 d-man, if not two, out of this off-season.

I think now we have the following for next few years:

Smith -- Severson
Graves -- Hamilton

With Bahl, Siegenthlaer, Mukhamalidullin, Edwards and Luke Hughes eventually working into picture (both Hughes and Smith play RD too).

If a Meier deal were to happen, it would be either a young forward or a young forward and a pick.
We can debate who that young forward would be, but I do not think any of those top-4 above would be part of trade (nor Jack Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Sharangovich or Holtz).
Pretty much anyone else is probably fair game.

I'm going to use that last statement for a month's worth of Meier/Mercer deals now 😂
