... Did the Canucks not have an AHL team last year? Why do we need to sign over a dozen AHL-caliber players?

Well first off Canucks and I believe Blues(?) were sharing a farm team last year.
Second, team moved and so they are signing a ton of local guys who will enjoy playing in Abbotsford.

Also, since the farm team is so close, it is wise to have fringe NHLers playing there. You can call someone up and they are a short bus trip to Vancouver.

On a side note, I live in Abbotsford, within walking distance of Abbotsford Centre. So I could get a chance to see plenty of these people play.
