This is a trade you make for Alex Nedeljkovic, not Darcy Kuemper.
I find it funny that Carolina only got a 3rd round pick for Nedeljkovic because Bernier decided to go play for the Devils.
Joe Sakic didn't even bother to ask for lottery protection on the 1st round pick.
And he gives up a blue-chip prospect.
And he gives up a 3rd round pick if the Avs win the Cup.
This is inexcusable for Colorado.
I voted for the Arizona Coyotes
Timmins is not a blue chip prospect. He may have been two years ago. At this point he's similar to a guy like Liljegren where he's 3 years post draft and not quite established as a firm nhler. Still good upside and I like him but he's not blue chip at this point.
Freddy got a 1st and 2nd from the leafs (Steel and Comtois)
Lehner (and the corpse of David Legwand) to Buffalo got the sens a 1st
But remember Freddie was an RFA. So leafs had full control and while im not saying Lou didnt overpay still was better than if he was a UFA. That said Kuemper is a UFA so could walk for nothing.
Either way this is very risky for Colorado but Kuemper is a very good goalie so its worth it for now. Probs gonna get him extended at the deadline
Damn, have to wonder how they weren't in on ullmark earlier. I mean keumper is good but its alot.
Still not sold on Ullmark. Like I know he did good in Buffalo but the most games he played in buffalo was 37games and he also has 0 playoff games. For Colorado that could signal red flags as what if he struggled in the post season. Mack would be going 10 years so to speak without winning **** (his words not mine). Kuemper was doing incredible in Arizona and showed he is a natural starter. Heck his playoff numbers weren't that bad either. Now I'm not saying the price Colorado paid wasn't high. But what they get is a genuine starting goalie (when healthy)
it's a late round first for a rental goalie. ++++
It's an overpay, but probably not as drastic as some people make it out to be.
The boom or bust on trade mentality at work.

Timmons > a 2nd plus the condition, but thats very minor. The lehner trade isn't equal because you're 10p% correct. It included a cap dump. Lots of cap dump cost draft capital. This is worse than both, but the Freddie trade is close, I'll give you that.
Jackpot W for the Yotes here. However, COL did upgrade from Grubauer (if healthy) and at a much lower AAV. The question is: will Darcy stay healthy? If he does, he'll be a Vezina finalist next season.
This is a pretty terrible trade by the Aves. Goalies don't have a lot of trade value. Ned got a 3rd Lehner got a 2nd. I honestly dont know the last goalie that got a 1st a good prospect and conditional 3rd.
They overplayed their hand and got screwed when they didn't get grubauer and all the other UFAs were gone. Kuemper was essentially the last option (still curious what's happening in Dallas mind you), and they were competing with Edmonton for kuemper. They had no leverage. They overpaid in a general sense but they messed up letting themselves get to that point and had to do it

Both of those were also for young goalies to be a goalie for the future. This is for a 31 year old pending Ufa. They had to overpay and did

How is kuemper an upgrade on grubauer? Grubauer was a Vezina finalist last year and is a great goalie...

Yes, but they didn't need to knee jerk it. They could have taken some time to think it through.

Then Edmonton would have traded for kuemper and they would be a contender with an mvp candidate and Norris candidate and no goalie. That's a good way to waste a good team.
In the end they've traded and drafted well so their prospect pool is deep (they still have Newhook and Byram Bowen and Kaut) and they couldn't afford to wait longer and lose even kuemper as an option.
