Seattle could have picked Dillon and flipped him to WPG for two of these picks, then picked Kahkonen instead of Soucy and probably got even more.

This continues to be a rough start for the Kraken.

A legend who never let in a single goal with the Kraken!

in all seriousness, this expansion draft is turning out to be a waste. I figure they're better off with a draft pick but you'd expect them to get such picks as sweeteners for the expansion. And the thing is many other teams would've been willing to pay more for Vanecek than the Caps. An easy win for the Caps and a bad omen of things to come for Seattle.

Seattle should've planned this better and not took Dreidger from FLA, then had a Grub-Vanecek tandem. Now they were pretty much forced to trade Vanecek. A 2nd round pick still isn't a bad return, though.

They will say that they didn't think they could get Grubauer but this is definitely an L. They could've had an extra 2nd if they took Dillon. I'm not sold on SEA so far. Hope I'm wrong

I thought there was an expansion rule so that teams couldn't re-acquire a player taken in the expansion draft within 1 year?

The last 3 weeks have been a masters class in how not to run an NHL team between Seattle, Chicago, Edmonton and Carolina, only time either side wins a trade is when they trade with each other

I believe that rule only applies to players with salary retained, but don't quote me because I can't double check right now.

I voted fair deal.

Vanacek is a former 2nd round pick who played decently during the regular season and Washington recovers their loss from the expansion draft.

If Adin Hill got a 2nd, then Vanacek should have too.

Some of Seattle's picks in the expansion draft aren't worth a 2nd round pick, so Seattle did nicely in this trade IMO.

That said, ...

Didn't Seattle just waste their expansion draft pick from Columbus??

Even though this was a fair trade, I don't think Ron Francis came out of the expansion draft smelling like a rose.

At least not yet anyway.

So let me get this straight: in an expansion draft where the Caps were going to lose a player...we ended up not only not losing a player, but gaining a second round pick? Wild.

Dillon gets two 2nd rounders but Vanecek only gets 1? I know quite a few teams that should have traded for Vanecek at this price.

It's easy to say it right now, after Seattle sign Grubauer. But who could know that they would sign a top goalie like him? It's something that happened after today's negotiation. The fact is: Seattle wanted to guarantee 2 good goalies in their roster. This is what they did. I can't see it as a mistake.

Regardless, Kahkonen was always the better of those two exposed goalies and Dillon is better than Soucy. The plan doesn't matter, they picked the two lesser value options and now get the lesser value trade.
