You did not just made me laugh at every single red wing fan fan who was offering a ton of first just to take on Johnson's contract

So Seabrook's on LTIR?
This league's a joke. It just seems like every GM not in contention is doing everything to make sure TB wins it every year by giving them valuable assets for dirt cheap. Nobody wanted Johnson for free but for a late ass 2nd two years away you're giving them the most precious item in this world, cap space and LTIR?!

actually no. LTIR on retired players isnt fair. It's literally breaking and circumventing the cap. The league should have stepped in the first time this happened. ****ing player is retired. Period

Yes, but not for this. They got a good player and a pick for nothing, and with Seabrook gone they’re able to accrue cap space more easily. (Now they’d still need to be over $3.9 million under the cap because of Shaw, but it’s a start)

You realize that the only thing that LTIRetirement does is make sure that the team that uses it can’t accrue cap space, and that the player gets paid the money they’re owed. It isn’t at all beneficial to any team.

The NHL has a soft cap and everyone but NHL front office knows it. It's a joke, just abolish it already. If NY wants to pay Goodrow $100M I say let em.

Make an actual two level cap.

Above the first level pay a luxury tax can't go above the next level. Make it like 20% above the first one.

For every aav 5% over the cap pay a dollar in luxury tax, every $ 5-10% over pay $2 in luxury tax, 10-15% $3, and 15-20% $4

Money goes to the small revenue or something teams so they can afford to spend and compete.

Or something like that.

So roughly
Min cap 60 mil
Luxury tax cap 84 mil
Max 100 mil

It's only acceptable if the player is legit injured and on the ltir. They have to get a league approved physical I believe.

I think the precedent was set with Marc Savard when he was so concussed he couldn't leave dark rooms with a quiet radio for months. There was a whole league thing about it.

Yes.

But according to the CBA, that is not what is suppose to happen to retired players. They are suppose to get paid, while counting against the cap.

No its not. Players get placed on it all the time when they could still play, but they are choosing to retire.

No retired players do NOT get paid. They give up their contracts to retire. They only remain on the cap if they signed a multi year deal after 35.

That is only the signing bonus. If under 35, they will not get signing bones, and the cap hit is what the salary is after the bonus is taken out. Over 35, everything is still due.

Not really. By the end of an NHL players career most are forcing their way through a lot of pain. Eventually a lot say enough is enough and they're done. Can't really blame them.

Here's the really sad story of Horton who had to live for years with excruciating back pain instead of having a surgical fix as it would have forced him to retire and not get paid

"If Horton can no longer play, he couldn't retire either, at least not officially. If he did, the cap recapture penalties would significantly impact the Blue Jackets and Horton wouldn't receive the money he is owed after signing the contract last fall. He could be placed on long-term injured reserve each year to keep his $5.3 million annual average salary off of the cap, but he'd still get paid."

I'm going to assume Seabrooks contract wasn't insured and the owner didn't want to pay it... Can't see another reason for this....

Don't all NHL level contracts must be unsured?
