If you can retain so much that he'd be making less than McCabe will (50% lol) , maybe a third. The thing is, McCabe and Suter are cheaper money and asset-wise while doing the same job

Let's say it's Gudas. At that point, the team would have a total of $17.159 mil in cap space next offseason, with only 11 players signed. Say Barkov takes $10.5 of that. There's $6.69 in space left. with 9-10 players needed to fill the 22 man roster.

This. There isn't a fit for Schmidt's contract in the roster which is what makes moving him a hard sell.
