I like the amount, but only if it were for 3 years or less. 5 years will take him until he's 40 and a I highly doubt that he'll even be worth 5 million by then. Good for him that he's still going after Gretzky's goal record, though. I just really don't like the term on this deal.

As a Caps fan, I both 1) know this contract sucks and 2) am super happy about it. We know the Caps will be a dumpster fire soon, but we don’t care. We just want Ovi to retire a Cap and have a fighting chance at Gretzky’s record (which he would beat easily if it weren’t for lockouts and COVID, sigh).

I’m going to edge with no, too much term for a player over 35, he’s Ovi but a decline will make this’s one of the worst contracts in the league

AAV isn't bad but that term is a Y I K E S. he is a liability in every situation except the Power Play.

I would say 40 years old, not 37. Many superstars have excelled through their late 30's.

No my point is if the deal goes beyond the age of 37y it should be 3 years max for example if a player is

29 - max deal 8 years
30 - max deal 7 years
31 - max deal 6 years
32 - max deal 5 years
33 - max deal 4 years
34 - max deal 3 years
35 - max deal 3 years
36 - max deal 3 years
37 - max deal 3 years
38 - max deal 3 years

So the contact can go beyond the age of 37, but it would be limited in length

If he was going to officially retire he could just agree to mutually terminate his contract, which would effectively be the same thing as him retiring, except he just requires Washington’s permission.

I don't think that would fly because of the 35 year + contract rule

Was he over 35 when he signed? I'd have to check. But he also didn't retire he went to another team (when he left la, you're referring to right?).

Kovalchuk wasn't on a 35+ contract, he signed that deal at age 27 ou 28

I was talking about Kovalchuk in LA. Which I was wrong, they kept his cap hit after terminating his contract.

Ok but he was on the books for the 3rd year, however the rule was modified in 2020 I think if the deal is evenly spread or backloded, the player can retire without penalty

Ok, that makes a lot more sense, especially because the Blackhawks wouldn’t have made today’s Fleury deal knowing that if he retired they have taken on $7 million in dead cap.

9.5M AAV for a 35+ contract…oof. Gonna hurt even more if Ovechkin begins to decline.

Is Ovechkin the best pure scorer of the NHL history? Yes. Is he the face of the franchise in Washington? No-brainer. Is he want to break Gretzky goal scoring record? Absolutely. But all those things don't change one fact: this is a REALLY BAD CONTRACT. He will carry 9.5M till 40 and I can bet with everyone that HE WILL NOT SCORE THE SAME NUMBER OF GOALS THAT HE DOES TODAY. Anyway, I can understand doing whataver it takes to bring Ovechkin back. Maybe HE could accept sign for less to give his team an opportunity to sign more good player to win another cup. But, I think he knows what's better for him and I respect his decision to ask for what he thinks he worths it.

I hate when teams value a persons reputation more than their actual ability. But this is one of the few reputation based contracts I like. Yes, it's a lot of money and years. But Ovechkin has been a major part of keeping hockey in DC and has been one of the major faces of the NHL for almost 20 years now. So no, the contract sucks if you're basing it on his skills and trying to compete for a cup. But the contract is good if you're trying to break a record and paying the guy who DC owes a lot to.

It is going to be a very rare thing in the modern NHL to sign anyone to 37. Just go look at the number of players that age already.
So I don't really see the point.

I'll be honest, this is a bad contract there is no way around that.
I wouldn't want to be holding that contract at 39 or 40.
It also signals for the fan base they don't care about winning just breaking a record.

They are not the same thing.

Caps team is not the same team with Wilson Neutered. We saw that last playoffs. Hell teams shoved OV around and abused him in the corner. With no Wilson they were just chumps on the ice.
This team will be worse next year not better. They needed cap savings here, and they needed reasonable term. They got neither.
They might as well start the rebuild now, as they signaled that's what's coming. Because you aren't winning paying a 38 year old almost 10 million per.
Which is where they will be shortly.

He should have been less than 100 goals away from breaking Gretzky's goal record.

2004, his rookie year was the canceled season. Using Matthews as an example, I think it's easy to say a 19 year old Ovie would score 40 goals.

2012, lockout season, minus 34 games. At the scoring pace he was on that season; add another 20 goals.

2019 and 2020 Covid seasons, cost him 40 games played. At the pace he was scoring at; add another 20 goals.

By comparison ; Gretzky had only one work stoppage during his career, the 1994 lockout. Which cost him 36 games, but at his scoring rate that season, maybe add another 8 goals to his total.

oh. and also this contract should have been $40 million for 5 years, making it a $8 million AAV, just like his jersey number.
