Description
The Leafs just announced to the league that they are willing to take on money at the TDL with the recent moves to LTIR. That being said they still have to be careful as they are technically going over the cap and they do need to take bonuses into consideration as Matthews is going to hit all of his and Marner and Nylander are going to hit some of theirs. Toronto will hit about 3.5M in bonuses so they need to be conservative when they get to about 6M.

1) This trade is about Washington dumping cap and Bowey is the cost of that. Orpik is better than Hunwick and Bowey is seen as better than Valiev, and shoots Right so is a need in the system. This allows Washington to make a move to bring in more talent for a cup run, or even a conference finals, an accomplishment in the OV era.

2) This is a classic Hockey trade, it fills needs for both teams. Toronto is very deep on offence and JVR is the most tradeable Veteran on the team. Carolina, along with Anaheim, have the deepest Defensive prospect pools in the League and could move one for Offensive help. (Before Palhal says they do not need LW, they can move Skinner to RW and JVR, Rask, Skinner on the top line is killer).

3) This is a cap dump as much as it is Chicago filling a hole. Toronto is looking to get something for an expiring contract and Kruger plays on the PK and fills the 4C hole in the lineup.

4) This is a cap dump that doesn't affect either team much. Teams are swapping 7th defencemen. The 3rd round pick is to make up for the salary gap.

OK, I won't mention that Canes, don't need a left winger, but Pesce for JVR is a crappy trade for Carolina. Cheap top four Dmen under control for five full years is worth more than one full year of JVR.
I know the Leafs have mentioned they will take on cap, but I wondering if they are so willing to take on cap for the next year and in Kruger's case two full years? And NOT having Kruger and Orprik gives the Leafs 8.6m to spend on two players which might be better, although by your trade they wouldn't have Bowey.

I know JVR only has one year on his contract, but this gives the Canes a full year to negotiate with him and they have more than enough cap space to give him what he wants, and while Pesce is young and controllable, but they have plenty of young controllable dmen and need offence and Toronto should be able to take advantage of that.

As for Kruger and Orpik, they are both still very solid NHLers and, there may be slightly better options out in free agency, but they fill specific holes on the roster now for a playoff push, and both bring a ton of Playoff experience that they can use to teach all the rookies and young players on the team what it takes to be a success in this league. also both contracts expire before Matthews and Marner are in need of extensions.

Canadian Redneck: OK. I'm saying the Canes can get a much better deal for Pesce than JVR. And this bit about being talking to an upcoming UFA...may not mean that much.

It may not but teams have done more with less. Ladd brought in a 1st and a prospect at the deadline last year and JVR is significantly better. Carolina needs to improve on this season and make playoffs in the next couple of seasons to stay relevant in a very not hockey market. JVR could be the difference for them. The Leafs could add a low level prospect like Rychel or Leivo, who are both NHL ready and could balance out the trade for you.

If that doesn't convince you they could turn it into a sign and trade.

How many sign and trades have we seen? Hardly any.
