Nobody has ever said he isn't an NHL dman. What he isn't is a top-pairing guy, he's like a #4 who's good at PK.

That's absurd, this trade and the signing are horrible but Jones is still a top pairing defenseman.

Hands down this is a great deal for CBJ, Jones is reclining with a now 9.5 × 8 deal, while Boqvist is a great defender and seems happy to get out of Chicago

If the Jones extension wasn't in place, maybe I'd say this was fair value

They traded Phil Esposito

I’m actually old enough (barely) to remember that one. Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield – 2/3 of the top line and the 2nd line center on the best Bruins team ever – for Gilles Marotte and Pit Martin. It didn’t seem quite as bad at the time as it does in hindsight. Martin was coming off a 20-goal season and Marotte was a tough defenseman who also had some offensive skills. Hodge was only a 10-goal scorer at that point and Stanfield was a minor leaguer. Esposito’s best years were still ahead of him, but he was already clearly the best player in the deal, so I’m sure people were saying Boston won the trade as soon as it was made, but it wasn’t until we saw what those three guys did in Boston that people started calling it the worst trade ever. Chicago had enough talent to survive the trade and remain a contender for the next several years, but it helped Boston go from last place to two Stanley Cups. (They should have won more, but Montreal had an equally powerful dynasty going at the same time.)

There was no free agency or salary cap in 1967, so it’s difficult to compare that trade with today’s NHL trades. By 1967 standards Chicago won the Jones trade because they got the best player, but this was obviously a huge win for Columbus for a pending UFA who had publically announced that he wouldn’t sign an extension. (I guess what he really said was that he wouldn’t sign an extension with Columbus.) One-year rentals usually don’t fetch that much in the trade market, so Columbus must have had other suitors. Kudos to Jarmo for getting a bidding war going and getting maximum value for a lame duck asset.

A good deal for Columbus doesn’t necessarily mean a bad deal for Chicago, but to give up all those assets to acquire his rights and then turn around and sign him to a bigger contract than he would have got in free agency seems like you’re paying for him twice. Why not keep Boqvist and the draft picks and sign a guy who’s already a free agent?

As bad as giving up the 6th pick....so is the 9.5m X 8 contract. Jones (and Nurse) certainly wouldn't get $$$$ dollar now.

Neither were worth it when they signed either. They would likely get the same contract if they signed now though.

If Columbus take Nemec or Jireck (not spelled right but you know who I mean), I will agree, or in a couple years if Bovquist breaks out, but right now he still is the best in this trade.

Now that Kane is gone and Toews is basically LTIRetired, this deal and signing looks even more absurd than it did at the time.

The worst trade in Chicago Blackhawks history.

Edit: As of 10/24/2021 this trade may be one of the worst in NHL history.

Tanner Jeanott has beaten this somehow

For me it depends on where the draft picks land an what Tampa does with Jeanott in the off-season.

He hasn't had much time to turn into much, he's been day-to-day injured since he got here.

I'm convinced he's been day-to-day since the 3rd grade.

I just realized that the 1st-round pick that went to Columbus in this trade had a condition on it that could have turned it into Chicago's 2023 1st-round pick (their own pick, not the one they got from Tampa for Hagel). Anyone remember who Chicago's 2023 1st-round pick was?

still good, and I will always push this agenda.

But this trade really set up Columbus for years to come, they had one of the quickest most effective rebuilds I can think of and most of it can be attributed to this trade.

If that happened, wow… just think about Fantelli & Bedard on the same team. Would be like a Draisaitl - McDavid pairing of the future.
