That won't get JBB to pull the trigger Colton is much better than Erne
Yes, I know Colton is better than Erne. I don't know if I would say
much better, but yes, better. Consider the following.
At the time of these trades occurring, Erne and Colton would both be 24 years old, though Colton will be 25 by the start of next season while Erne was 24 during the majority of his first season with the wings. Erne was picked at 33rd overall, Colton was picked 118th. In the season Erne had before he was traded, Erne played in just more than twice as many games as Colton and more than quadrupled his hit total of 36, with 159. So yes, though I see Colton as a superior offensive player despite his low sample size, the only things that would give him more trade value or make him more likely to be kept than Erne are slightly higher scoring numbers and the fact that he can play center. Erne had a higher draft pedigree, more NHL experience, and a better physical game. Their trade value has to be extremely similar even before factoring in that Tampa would have more trouble fitting Colton under the cap.
Replace the TBL fourth rounder with Detroit's if you feel so inclined, either way this trade makes more sense and has more fair value than some trades that actually happen in the NHL (See Nedeljkovic trade for reference). Again, I like Colton as a player. That's the
entire reason I'm trading for him in this scenario. I believe a fourth round pick is fair value for a pending RFA of Colton's caliber and pedigree when considering that the team holding his rights has to move mountains to get the cap space to sign him.
