Gotta fill that hole somehow and his got on the 3rd pair was fantastic. I know there’s a lot of talk about Menell but I’m not sold yet.

Anyways, just seeing what other folks think of the idea.

I think Guerin was counting on the Soucy cap space, not that he wasn't worth every penny, but because the Wild are in the situation they are in. In good news I think Wild might give Menell the one way contract he was hoping for now.

I know it’s petty but I don’t give Menell a one way deal. The other thing I think of is that Soucy and Menell play very different games.

Guerin has already offered Menell a 1 year 2-way contract. Russo reported that it was a take it or leave it final offer.

The Wild can just sign a free agent to provide most of what he brought. He was a great fit because he was playing on the third pair behind an elite top four. He's not worth anything close to Firstov and a 2nd.

He’s setting a good precedent for the Boldy negotiation here.

Guerin will look to fill the void with UFA's I suspect.

Yup. I’m really hoping for a run at McCabe as a Soucy replacement. Interested to see what he does for Suter since you can’t really replace that.

Not necessarily. Boldy isn't due up for another two seasons, and even then probably gets a two or three year bridge deal to get him past the final year of the large dead cap.

That’s just the deal I’m most concerned about. Boldy burned that first year on purpose and it looks like BG will hold that against him, as he should. And yea, it will be a bridge but it may also be that I’m reacting to Guerin’s negotiating style rather than any specific contract.

I don't mind McCabe. I would also heavily consider Pettersson from Pittsburgh or see if we can snag Dunn from Seattle.

Burned the first year on purpose? Holding it against him? That was a pretty standard situation with Boldy joining the organization after college. Plenty of guys did it this season, and others do it every year. The only abnormal part about it is usually the GM/coach tries to get the top prospect some NHL games, and the Wild didn't do that, for some reason.

Pettersson with a bit of retention is worth a very serious look.

He burned it so he could go pro. Whether that was with Iowa or with the Big Club is irregardless immaterial and inconsequential, it would of happened either way.

Why? As much as I would love it if it happened, it won't, Oleksiak just signed for 5x$4.6M and McCabe will likely cost around the same price point. $4M is the going standard rate for legitimate Top 4 defenseman in the NHL these days.

Why does everyone continue to think we can get a possible top 4 caliber player for less than market value?

If I’m not mistaken McCabe’s 2 year deal on EW is around 2 mil, but I could be wrong. That’s been my basis for his number.

As for Pettersson, we’d be making a trade and we will need the cap so I think it would be prudent get some extra room. You obviously have to pay for that but it could be very worth it I’m the long run.

I've seen a couple of Pettersson to the Wild trades already just today. They've run the gambit from giving them 2 3rd rounders to giving them Greenway for Pettersson and a 22 2nd.

I kinda like that Greenway one.

Edit: That is the comp for McCabe, but keep in mind that he was playing at and solidified himself as a legitimate Top 4 defenseman this year until he went down with a season ending injury. It's one of the few comps I don't trust them on.

He could have finished the year in Iowa on an ATO with his ELC starting this year. Burning the 1st year wasn't the only option if he wanted to keep playing after his college season was done.

I do too. I wonder what the market will end up looking like. When I saw the Oleksiak/Larsson signing and the sheer number of 4/5 d men, it felt like they were trying to corner the market. I would like to fill a few holes before the draft if only for the certainty.

You don't sign your top prospect to an ATO because you want to avoid burning the first year. You want to talk about handling young player contracts horribly? That's that.

What you DO do is play your top prospect in the NHL so you didn't burn the year for nothing.

Russo explained why that was never an option. He was going Pro irregardless, he never planned on going back to college. Besides the AHL never had a training camp for him to tryout for last season and even if it had, it would of ended long before Boldy's college year would have. An ATO was never in the cards, unless Boldy waited until the start of next season to use one. Which would of been redundant, either way.

Huh? Just because it's called a tryout doesn't mean it has to be used during a training camp. It can be done whenever. Look at any CHL player who joins their AHL team once their season is done using an ATO. The only difference between him signing his contract to burn the year and him signing an ATO so his ELC didn't start until next year is that he wouldn't have been eligible to join the NHL roster. Since he never got called up, it would have made no tangible difference.
