I know the Kraken has a whole off-season to make trades with other teams, but this team will struggle as it stands. I know they were trying to take an analytical approach to the draft and leave as much cap space open as possible for the FA window, but many of the players on this list make me scratch my head. MacDermid instead of Lizotte? Geekie instead of Bean (and no, there wasn't a side deal for Geekie)? Pitlick instead of Lyubushkin or Bunting?

This draft leaves me concerned that the Kraken's inaugural season won't go nearly as well as Francis hopes. We'll see what happens, but I'm afraid to say that I'm not impressed.

I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. The rules are stated on this website in fact that he has played four professional seasons between the AHL and NHL, and he signed his NHL contract as a 20 year old. This past season was the last year he does not have to clear waivers to be sent back-and-forth. When he is exposed to waivers after not making this roster the Sabres will just take him back for free, unless Seattle intends to keep him on the roster or trade him to someone else.

The fact that they loaded up on like 5-6 young defensemen with varying potential after already nabbing four veterans tells me they can afford to sell off at least a few of them, but that forward pool is dry. Ron Francis is gonna have to work the phones to inject this team with more offensive firepower, likely by utilizing that extra cap space.

I was really excited of the possibilities for Seattle in this expansion draft. I had planned to stop cheering the Habs (the only team I've cheered for) and become a full fledge Kraken fan. But, after seeing the leaked picks come out during the day, not a chance I'm switching teams. This team is going to be absolutely brutal. Of all the goalies available, to select three that have a combined 84 games of NHL experience, it's ridiculous!!!!!

Geekie is the only questionable pick I would give a pass, if only because Francis is familiar enough with the Carolina organization to get the benefit of the doubt. However… Bayreuther? Quenneville? Twarynski? Kurtis freaking MacDermid over Lizotte and Athanasiou? Oleksiak signed for 5 years at 4.6 million per? Most of this draft went well, but those few big misses put a damper on everything. And why so many left handed defensemen? Why so many right handed forwards? Ron Francis must have a plan with these players, and it’s gotta be good to make up for the opportunity cost.
