Description
Canucks recoup the 3rd in the Schmidt trade. Philly gets a top 4 D that can play the right side for cheap acquisition price.

Schmaltz is owed a lot of money still on his contract. Arizona moves him and gets some picks back. This could be top 10 protected instead so don't get too caught up on the protection.

Holtby trade is really anywhere for about half salary retained. I think they can find someone who will take him at that price. Nashville could use another goalie unless askarov is going to backup. I like bringing trenin back in the deal as a Russian player but really it doesn't matter it could be anyone on an entry level salary whether they're NHL caliber player or not.

Defense is questionable but that's something they can address more the following season.

They get Larsson on a solid AAV by giving him lots of term. Risky but ideally the contract is structured so it's not buyout proof in the final 2 years.

McCabe signs a "prove it" deal after his injury in a place that he should fit in well and get plenty of opportunity.

Schmidt won’t bring back what you got him for a year ago. Not with his performance last year or the flat cap. I personally think he’ll rebound really well but if you trade him now you’ll get lucky to get anything back and will likely have to take on a not great contract coming back

I disagree. I think someone will still pay at least a 3rd for him. There was reported interest at the deadline for him.

Why though? Why is he worth what you spent a year ago when he was much worse than previous years? There’s a glut of defenseman available this year and a bunch more lining up for FA next year.

If you retain salary, possibly. Otherwise, I doubt you get a 3rd.

He's still a legitimate top 4 dman that most analysts agree just didn't fit well with what the Canucks need. Canucks got him at a heavy discount last year because Vegas had to clear space with the Piet signing. Next year's FA class doesn't help teams that want to improve now. I agree there will likely be dmen available via trade this summer but most of those dmen will cost more than a 3rd. Your unlikely to get a better dman than Schmidt at that acquisition price.

Acquisition price, maybe. But at 6M, that’s a big number even for a good middle pair guy. Like I said, I personally like him but just seeing some of the activity in the last few weeks, it’s hard to imagine high priced guys who didn’t perform well last season will have much interest. Honestly best case is probably he stays with VAN, gets back to his normal numbers and play and then they can move him when the cap concerns likely go away.

I definitely see where you're coming from and we will see what happens. I think someone will give up a 3rd but who knows. If they can't recoup something decent then I think they will just keep him.
