Description
Definitely a different team than most of my WPG AC-GM's but what are the thoughts on acquiring Drouin?

Ehlers and him played for Halifax during the 2013-14 season and were #1 and #2 in points. Perhaps there could be some chemistry?

I am not sure what the asking price for Drouin would be given his absence from MTL down the stretch but I figure this is fair.

Targeted McCabe on a 1 year "show me" deal after he missed most of last season due to injury.

Not sure if Savard signing in Winnipeg is realistic but there is that PLD connection so you never know.

Thoughts?

Copp is definitely more known for his defensive game rather than offense (outside of this year). If he didn't have the offensive year he did, I definitely wouldn't go that high. And that's good to know about Drouin, I'm glad his value isn't as high as I assumed. Yeah, for Savard I genuinely have no clue what is $$ value is...we shall see!

Yeah, I'm a fan of Copp's. I think he's a solid player. But you don't want to pay 3rd line wingers significant money in general. I suspect he falls back to being a 25-30 point player and everyone feels he is overpaid. Its not a massive overpayment (not like people would blink if he was paid say 2.9 mil). I do think he has a lot of leverage with that season he's coming off though and no more RFA years, so you may be stuck paying it. I do like limiting the term to 4 years. I don't have a lot of faith he'll keep it up forever given his style of play. This takes him to 30, which seems pretty good for locking in prime years.

Really curious to see what the Savards of the NHL get this summer.

That's a crazy overpay for Drouin. First we'll have to wait and see what is up with him and if he wants or can continue to play. Assuming he can and wants to continue to play, you treat him like any other player with an anchor contract. If Montreal isn't paying you to take him away, then you let them keep him and deal with his cap hit. Taking on Drouin's full cap hit and giving up positive young assets to do so, is terrible cap and contract management.

You're too hung up on what Drouin did 8 years ago. At this point, he is what he is, a player not worth his cap hit and at his age it is extremely unlikely he gets better.

I feel like Drouin was overrated early in his NHL career/early Montreal career for his junior work, and underrated now because he has been a whipping boy in Montreal.

He is an average second line winger who has put up about a 45-58 point pace in the last 4 or 5 years. Admittedly his production has dropped a bit the last couple years, but frankly Montreal's centres are not very good...

I guess if you think he is declining he is a cap anchor. If you think he is still a 50-55 point player, which I do (again I think those centres suck), then he's probably worht high 4's. Yeah and overpay but not an anchor.

Yeah, I guess it's all personal preference with him. I really liked him in junior, but since then everything that has gone wrong with him is his own doing.

For me, Drouin at 26 is what he is, isn't likely to improve and is getting to the age when players start to drop in production. A 5.5 cap hit for 2 years with a modified NTC and the headaches and baggage he brings with him far outweighs any positive he might bring if absolutely everything goes right for him.

Fair enough. Honestly before posting my last comment I thought he had been more a 50-60 point player not a 45-55 point one and hadn't realized his last two were his worst years. .
That being said I think I mostly responded to cap anchor. It's probably semantics but to me he's more a bad contract than an anchor. Anchors are a level worse than him at least in my head

Okay, I guess hung up was the wrong word, but giving up good assets for a guy based on what he did 8 years ago is perplexing. If be really surprised if Montreal could return more than a 4th or 5th if the other team is taking the full cap hit. Edmonton excluded.

8 years ago?? Is this Jonathan Duncan Keith
