That's a crazy overpay for Drouin. First we'll have to wait and see what is up with him and if he wants or can continue to play. Assuming he can and wants to continue to play, you treat him like any other player with an anchor contract. If Montreal isn't paying you to take him away, then you let them keep him and deal with his cap hit. Taking on Drouin's full cap hit and giving up positive young assets to do so, is terrible cap and contract management.
You're too hung up on what Drouin did 8 years ago. At this point, he is what he is, a player not worth his cap hit and at his age it is extremely unlikely he gets better.
I feel like Drouin was overrated early in his NHL career/early Montreal career for his junior work, and underrated now because he has been a whipping boy in Montreal.
He is an average second line winger who has put up about a 45-58 point pace in the last 4 or 5 years. Admittedly his production has dropped a bit the last couple years, but frankly Montreal's centres are not very good...
I guess if you think he is declining he is a cap anchor. If you think he is still a 50-55 point player, which I do (again I think those centres suck), then he's probably worht high 4's. Yeah and overpay but not an anchor.
