Drouin and UFAs

Description
Definitely a different team than most of my WPG AC-GM's but what are the thoughts on acquiring Drouin?

Ehlers and him played for Halifax during the 2013-14 season and were #1 and #2 in points. Perhaps there could be some chemistry?

I am not sure what the asking price for Drouin would be given his absence from MTL down the stretch but I figure this is fair.

Targeted McCabe on a 1 year "show me" deal after he missed most of last season due to injury.

Not sure if Savard signing in Winnipeg is realistic but there is that PLD connection so you never know.

Thoughts?

Big overpay on Drouin

Glad it's an overpay and not under! What do you think is a fair value for Drouin?

Interesting team.

I'd be leery giving Copp that money. He only just broke out offensively at 27 years old. If he regresses 4 mil is a lot for the player he has been the rest of his career. Good player but not that much

Drouins value has tanked. I think you could get him for either piece. Don't need both.

I'm very curious what Savard signs for. D market under 32 or so is pretty thin this summer and he's a good but not special player. Last summer guys of his rough level like Granlund (obviously a forward but I just meant fairly young and good but not great) got really squeezed. Really have no idea what he'll sign for.

The hard part about Drouin is that we really dont know what kind of personal stuff he has going on right now. However that aside honestly a 2nd would be fine just to get his money off of the books for MTL

Copp is definitely more known for his defensive game rather than offense (outside of this year). If he didn't have the offensive year he did, I definitely wouldn't go that high. And that's good to know about Drouin, I'm glad his value isn't as high as I assumed. Yeah, for Savard I genuinely have no clue what is $$ value is...we shall see!

That's very true, the fact that no one really knows definitely makes this more of gamble and decreases his current value even more. That sounds like a better trade value to me.

That's a crazy overpay for Drouin. First we'll have to wait and see what is up with him and if he wants or can continue to play. Assuming he can and wants to continue to play, you treat him like any other player with an anchor contract. If Montreal isn't paying you to take him away, then you let them keep him and deal with his cap hit. Taking on Drouin's full cap hit and giving up positive young assets to do so, is terrible cap and contract management.

You're too hung up on what Drouin did 8 years ago. At this point, he is what he is, a player not worth his cap hit and at his age it is extremely unlikely he gets better.

Even when healthy he was just an average 2nd line player, and given the marker and how cheap those guys are right now and how he has lost his spot in MTL I don't think it would be hard for anyone to take him should they really want to

I have my doubts that Comrie would re-sign with the Jets knowing that he is the #4 goalie in the Jets system (assuming Brossoit is back). I'm thinking he would try to find a place where he would be the AHL starter or in a competition for a role like that.

I had no clue what Drouin's actual value is given the current circumstances surrounding his absence from the Canadiens. If those were made clear that would effect his value either way. I don't think he has negative value like you stated but given all the comments, I doubt you'd have to pay much to acquire him.

I can tell you I am certainly not "hung up" on what Drouin has done in the past hahaha, this is my first ever trade involving him and figured he might be able to find his game again with familiar line mates. I certainly won't be disappointed if Drouin never becomes a Jet, just an idea I threw out there!

Totally fair! I figured since he always speaks so highly of the organization and vice versa, maybe he would be content with coming back but you're probably right. If not, we sign another AHL goalie with experience.

I like the idea of acquiring Drouin, honestly. Unless his personal issues are too much to overcome, he can probably only go up from here. Reuniting with Ehlers could be cool. Definitely the time to buy low on him. However, that package is a little rich. I'd do a mid round pick OR that package you have above with half of his salary retained.
I love the Savard signing. That would be the most balanced right handed trio in the league. Each guy could play 20 mins a night and everyone's happy.
I hope you're right about Appleton. I like the player, but I think you can replace Appleton easier than DeMelo.
I don't mind the McCabe signing. I like the idea of the Heinola/Samberg duo trying to fight for that spot against a more veteran guy.
I'm probably in the minority about Stanley, but I actually think we should expose him. While he's a few inches shorter, I think Samberg will be a better version of him. Plays a bit better defensively too.
All things considered, I like it a lot! I think most of it is fair (current Drouin trade value aside)

Agreed about his value, however I think unless Drouin specifically requests a trade he will remain with the Habs.

He may indeed stay and the Jets could make it more attractive by making his AHL salary higher. I agree that the impact either way isn't going to be big.

Okay, I guess hung up was the wrong word, but giving up good assets for a guy based on what he did 8 years ago is perplexing. If be really surprised if Montreal could return more than a 4th or 5th if the other team is taking the full cap hit. Edmonton excluded.

Whatever you can get back for Niku will be fine, as he is destined to be picked up on the waiver wire otherwise. I read in the Athletic that the Sharks were going have Gambrell and True compete for their 4C spot, but if they want to take a chance on Niku I guess they could part with one of their 4C bodies.

Really tough to say, which is why I usually don't touch on it. With Weber out they all of a sudden have a lot of cap to work with, but I think MTL goes big time again this offseason and he is the most sensible money to move off the books

I hope they do something big cause we are about to have 4 huge holes again (1 LHD, 2\3 C, 1\2 RHD, 2 G) with Weber, Danault and Allen potentially all gone and our current 1 LHD hole LOL.

Back up goalies are back up goalies, so w/e there.

Weber should be very replaceable and there will be plenty of options. MTL's D isn't good anyways.

I think they should be all over Eichel personally.

I sort of agree with you on Allen, Not sure why anyone is so worried about losing him.

Weber hurts cause we have no one to replace him in our system, and the FA market for the top RHD will be intense and we are likely to miss on them all.

I wouldn't touch Eichel as the price is rumored to be insanely high (quoiting other "GM's double his value") on top of that there is the risk he is not the same player after surgery.

In openness I think MTL's D overall is really bad. I think Barrie could be an interesting galaxy brain replacement but I would look to elevate internally. There are more names out there than ever.

I personally think there is an Eichel deal that makes sense for MTL but MB has been gunshy with trades a lot of the time
