Leddy is a rental and that makes Detroit uninterested in paying for him.

I wouldn't really classify a 5th as paying for him. Maybe DET can entice NYI to add seeing as NYI needs to shed the cap.

Leddy could also be a nice deadline add for a contender. I would imagine DET would get more than the 5th at that point.

the appeal of leddy in this situation is that you pay a fifth, which is basically nothing, and then can flip him at the deadline at 50% retained for more. the isles won’t do it because they’re contending, but i’m sure the wings could get at least a 2nd for him at the deadline

Just to add to your good analysis. Maybe Detroit shouldn't be adding big cap by signing good UFAs at this point, save the cap for next couple of years. Bu they owe to their fans and players to man a good team and spending more than available cap this year. Your suggestion is very valid....spend more to the cap getting expiring contracts and getting futures at the deadline.

In a sense Detroit is paying for him. It’s an opportunity cost not like the 5th will see the NHL but rather that 5.5M AAV could be used for cap dumps. Another note is it’s a backloaded contract 7M cash with actually does factor into decisions now (look at the Gator buyout for Detroit). I don’t think we’re the right fit unless we’re talking about taking Ladd on from you guys or some other dump.

Leddy is fine for a 5th, he fills a hole all season and then we retain half and Trade him at the deadline for a better return

Brown>Bellows

Brown’s had his struggles with injuries but his production has always been there when healthy. When healthy (which I know is a big carat) he’s out produced Bellows at every level. Neither of them played much this past season but in 19-20 Bellows had 31 points in 52 games. Brown almost out produced him as he put up 28 points but he did that in only 25 games….

If the trade is 1 for 1 then Ottawa likely passes. Would have to think the Islanders add.

Detroit seems like they’re going to have a hard time even reaching the cap floor, seeing that they have $50 million in cap space, aren’t a prime free agent destination as of now and only have a few RFAs who will be getting 7-figure extensions.

I’d wager that they would have enough space to acquire players who will actually help the team and make the players who will stay long term better, as well as taking on a couple of contracts in exchange for draft picks and young players.

We will hit the cap floor when we resign a few of our rfas and bring back bernier and probably lgd.

Those are fair points. I won’t lie, I wasn’t too familiar with Brown’s AHL performance, just that he was a former first rounder who hadn’t cracked the NHL yet. Since I wouldn’t really have any interest in adding to this, I suppose I’d look elsewhere as far as moving Bellows (although I’m leaving the trade here lol).

Out of curiosity, what would you say a healthy Brown’s ceiling is at this point in his career?

Shouldn’t be an issue at all. We have a minimal amount of guys signed and several RFAs (eg Hronek, Bert) to eat that figure. Everyone says X isn’t an attractive destination but we’ve seen players sign for various reasons (coaches, money, players, etc). I’m not worried about it at all hitting the 61.5M floor.

Brown's ceiling is probably a 40-50 point, pass first, 2nd line centre. He's 6'6 but not overly physical so maybe like a Blake Wheeler lite. His ceiling is high but he's been consistently injured and if he keeps getting set back then his floor is probably out of the league. Unlike Bellows who can fit into a bottom 6 role, Browns skill set and motor likely dont translate well to the NHL well in a smaller role. He's better than the AHL so if he stays healthy this year and doesnt perform then I could see him going to the KHL or something.

He's definitely boom or bust and Ottawa using a protection slot on him confirmed that whether he pans out or not, they definitely want to see him realize that potential in Ottawa and the risk/reward with him potentially not panning out is still worthwhile at the moment.
