Description
For the "who you gonna lose next year?" post that are sure to come, the answer is Zibanejad. Let him walk in free agency and have Chytil jump into 2C for the following year, a role I personally think he will handle fine. Then you'd look to have either Robertson or Schneider taking over the 6th D spot, and either a cheap vet or Drury, if he shows enough in Hartford, playing 3C.

The year after all that (2023-24) you look to trade Trouba and/or Kreider in order to clear room to re-sign Laf and K'Andre. And yes I'm aware they will both still have NMC but that doesn't mean you can't trade them, it just means you can only trade them to where they want to go.

i'm not commenting on any of the signings or trades, but in this scenario the Rangers would have $21M in cap space for the following season (assuming cap stays the same).
it wouldn't be ideal and pretty tight, but not out of the question....

Just for fun, it's kinda interesting to look at the long term outlook for this team...you've got $60.62 mil locked up right off the bat, with 13 guys signed. You'll also need to add on $5.484 mil because of the bonus overages that you'll carryover into next year, so we're at $66.10.

Let's go with the best case scenario, which would be that the cap jumps to $82.5 (The latest CBA has that as highest possible for 2022-23). So, you've got $16.39 mil.

Players to sign:
-Fox ($9 mil? Guess it'll probably mirror/be slightly more than whatever Makar signs for)-$7.396 remains
-Kakko-$2 mil on a bridge deal? Hope he doesn't have a massive leap forward this year? $5.396 remains
-Kravtsov-$2 mil on a bridge deal? $3.396 remains
-3C-?
-Blackwell-?
-Backup goalie?
-3 depth players to get to a 22 man roster-$2.25 mil ($1.146 remains)

It's not as easy as it may seem.

With the signings I did the Rangers have almost $21million in cap space next year. As of this offseason I figured Fox, Kakko, and Krav would eat up around $14.5 of that. That still leaves almost $6.5mil for the 6D, 7D, 3C, 4RW and maybe a 14F. (I have Leivo signed for two years as the 13F). If Drury and Robinson/Schneider take 3C and 6D, that leaves $4.5mil for a 7D, 4RW and 14F. All easily doable.

And if it happens to be Kakko and/or Krav go beast mode this year and demand bigger paydays, that leaves an extra million or two of cap space to work with on their deals.

Just looking at his faceoff stats and he's like 3rd on the team these past four years in faceoffs taken. If it was only a handful you'd think it's mostly when the center gets thrown out of the circle. With the amount he's taken, there is no way he hasn't played center a good amount of games.

Hes not a centre, but if you thinking forcing a winger to play centre for the first time in his career is a good idea. Have fun

taking faceoffs on mackinnons offhand side in the offensive zone for set plays to give mackinnon a shot from the high circle is not playing centre
He takes faceoffs only in those situations. He does not play Centre....Ever

Isn't that assuming all of the A bonuses are hit? I assume for this past year only Fox hit all of them, and Miller hit one or two.

Good question...not 100% sure TBH. If so, maybe there's some breathing room, but probably still dangerous. Edit: Also dangerous to assume that Trouba or Kreider would have any intention of being moved anywhere.

Side note-Great name. Kenny Wu was the GOAT.

Chris Kreider I believe is also good on face offs- but he is by no means a C...Lots of people seem to place a lot of emphasis on faceoff %....I'm not saying it's totally irrelevant- for instance Chytl does have to get better if he has any ambitions to be a 2C in this league- but other things are so much more important...vision, reads, and anticipation on the ice, and defensive assignments- just to name a few. All in all I think the Landeskog move is a bad idea- lot of money and term to a guy with mileage on him. Deals like this will create a narrow contention window and most likely a buyout situation a few years from now...NO THANKS. Much better use of their capspace for this year is to weaponize it...lots of teams will be looking to clear out 4-6M in cap space this year- and I doubt Seattle helps any of them out...if the Rangers play their cards right here they may obtain a useful 3rd or 4th liner (which they need for the short term anyway) and in the process gain additional picks in the loaded 2022 draft.

The most faceoffs Kreider has ever taken in a season is 120. In the past four years the least amount of faceoffs Landeskog has taken was 418, with the most being 693. This year Landeskog was 2nd on the Avs in faceoffs taken. It's not so much his faceoff percentage as it is the sheer amount of faceoffs he's taken that make me believe he's played center for at least a handful of games per season, and it's not just "set plays in the offensive zone" the Avs fan said it was.

Getting in a pissing contest with Avs fans as to how their team uses their player is probably a waste of time...as far as Kreider- my mention of him was just to further the point that a good center ice man
is not based on faceoff %- but a number of factors- among which faceoff % is a minimal consideration (unless it is abysmal). As far as chasing Landeskog goes- the Rangers are in a unique situation in that they are one of the few teams not in an immediate cap crunch....thus they are in a position where they can take advantage of one of several teams which have little time to get themselves under the cap next year. Ron Francis realizes this and will not bail out any of these teams without a BIG sweetener. NYR should do the same- yet chasing guys like Landeskog will prevent them from being able to take advantage of the current opportunity.
