Next Years D UFAs plus cap space plus TOR expansion trade

Description
Next year's Defensive UFAs are Lindholm, Jones, Rielly, Pullock, Nurse, Parayko, Ekholm, Klingberg, plus more. The Hawks don't need to lose assets this year AT ALL. if CBJ wants the 30th pick in 2022 and a minor prospect for retaining on Seth Jones...fine. They can do that. Chicago should NOT be sending their 2021 1st rounder at all for him...even if that's all there is to send.

TOR is about to lose Kerfoot to Seattle for nothing....so is the LTIR bucket for Shaw next year and Nylander worth a 2nd. I tend to think that from TOR's perspective it is. The money for Shaw really isn't much for them...AND they can gain additional cap space for a TDL acquisition. Plus Nylander is a project that's expansion exempt.

I know Benning has said he won't shed assets to lose Ericsson. I just don't understand why though. VAN should be extending Hughes and Petterson long term right now.

CBJ still need centers. I'm bias, I know, but I do think Strome has more value that this site believes. It's not his fault the Blackhawks won the lottery and got to draft Dach.

Yeah I added on that just now on the previous comment.

But his contract is up this year. I don't see how he provides relief after his contract expires.

I think we're talking different things. My example is during the season. The whole Clarkson Gabs is out of season.

Indeed. So acquiring Shaw wouldn't help them.

I believe the rule was that in order to place an asset to LTIR but have no other assets there, the team must be under the cap when doing it. In other words, they could only put Shaw to LTIR if he'd fit to their cap before putting him in there, at which point the need of acquiring the guy is pretty much gone.

This is why the acquisitions of Gaborik and Clarkson from TB and TOR respectively only happened after they had asset on LTIR. Kucherov and Horton in this instance.

Sorry, made an edit to an earlier post. I think we're talking different things. You're talking about an out of season trade. My initial assumption is Day 2 after Shaw is already sent to LTIR.

I think even then he'd only be on Chicago's LTIR, but not the Leafs' one. Should he get traded to Leafs then, he'd have to fit under the Leafs cap in order to be placed in Leafs' LTIR afterwards.

Yeah maybe, I guess I'd have to do more research. I thought that once he was LTIR he was LTIR for anyone. Great convo though!

I like your first point in the explanation of your AGM, you are right, there are too many UFAs next offseason on D and Hawks don't need to throw away assets to get one.

Regarding Kerfoot, I don't like him and don't think he's even worth Nylander. Nylander is hard to trade right now when he doesn't have much value, but if...and it's a big if...he blossoms this season then we will regret moving him. I don't love the idea of trading him unless another team values his potential more then his actual real value on the ice so far.

Toews, Dach and Suter are our centers which makes Strome expendable. Moving Dach to the wing, I get the reasons why, shouldn't happen yet. He's our future 1C and until we definitely know he's not, we need to role with his development as such. Borstrom to me is as big if not bigger of a wild card as Nylander, so play him in the AHL until he proves otherwise.

I've said is a dozen times at least on here, but Hino has proven he looks good in a Hawks sweater. Give him another chance on a cheap contract. Hagel - Suter - Hino can be an awesome 3rd line.

Getting back to point #1, Kalynuk is definitely not a 1st liner so that will hurt putting him up there. I know the fan's love him, but in an ideal world, he and Stillman will both be fighting for ice time based on what they've shown so far. Throw Caleb Jones into that mix too. None of those players have proven they can handle the NHL full-time just yet. If we have De Haan and Z still around, those guys will take more minutes IMO, though I wish one of them is gone.

I agree with you. I'm not intending to keep forgetting Hino...I just think he's a minor piece to the puzzle. I didn't sign ANY UFAs. Just kept the guys already in the Hawks system. Also agreed on Kalynuk. I just put him there because I like the DPair combinations of size/speed/experience. Those combos could be swapped around for sure. Nylander is a riddle to me. I like him as a bottom pair guy. I don't envision him being a top 6 guy. From what I've seen, he does work hard which is very contrary to what BUF fans were saying. I want someone with more speed. I just made this as an example. Since he's expansion exempt...Another team might look at him with more favor if they're about to lose a forward for nothing. The Hawks are protecting one of Gaudette or Kampf which seems like the Hawks could better use those protection slot IMO.

Is this better or worse than losing Kerfoot to Seattle for nothing in return?

Worse because we lose a second as well

I wouldn't trade our second for Nylander, and we get that cap space anyways from Seattle taking kerfoot. Shaw only helps our cap space if we already have someone on ltir.

If the Shaw portion was during off season I'd agree, buy the trade assumes that part is during the season.

You also have to consider that moving kerfoot means Seattle takes someone else from us. The trade just doesn't make sense
