Holland had money to spend and could give most FA Dman more money than they would have got with other teams. Sure he would have to overpay one or two but still better than having a 37 year old making over 5mill. Mccabe, Murray, Martinez, Hamilton were all significantly better options. Mccabe especially who would have been happy to leave Buffalo.

Now someone do the same in acquiring Tyler Johnson from Tampa.

Honestly I wanna say this is fair, but the Blackhawks get a pretty big W out of this easy cap space for them, I question what Holland is trying to do though.

The big thing isn't even the 3rd+Jones. It's Keith's contract. Even taking Keith for free is a bad deal for Edmonton.

Now you're paying a 38 year old "all of famer" washed up defenceman 5.5M for the next 2 years. Keith as a FA wouldn't be getting anywhere close to 5.5M

I understand why EDM fans are upset. I myself had Mikko coming back to CHI. What this tells me is really just how much salary actually plays a factor for EVERY single team except TOR. Owners don't look at losing millions like fans do...because it's not the fan's money.

Also, EDM still got the best player in the deal by a very wide margin. Nothing going to CHI is likely even NHL bound. Maybe if Seth comes and can help Caleb with his development. Caleb isn't even the Hawks 4th younger NHL dman.

Looks like Ken Holland got some tips from his ol' buddy Peter Chiarelli. Bad trade for Edmonton receiving and overpaid 37 year old defenseman, but good for Chicago who receives an almost as good yet 13 years younger defenseman and a 3rd. And the Blackhawks also get rid of cap here.
