Caleb Jones is a 7th defenseman in Edmonton. Which is basically like being the Assistant Fry Salter at McDonalds. If him being a top 4 pairing on the Hawks is an upgrade... oh my.

First off, if he isn't good enough for your 7th defenceman, how do you figure he's worth a 3rd from any team?

Secondly, he's making $5.4MM this season, and Ottawa isn't paying De Haan $3.4MM even if he is a local boy. He has to beat out 2017 15th overall pick Brannstrom for the second pair minutes, and Brannstrom was okay playing those minutes last season, or DeHaan has to be more financially viable than Victor Mete for 3rd pair minutes. De Haan either isn't good enough, or he makes way too much money for Ottawa, a cash wary team. It would be great to have him as a 6/7 D, but you're not getting anything of value even with retention. The retention just gets Ottawa's attention, it doesn't sweeten the deal. No retention, and it's not even a discussion.

Ottowa was a placeholder, could be any team. He's good enough to be our 4th/5th dman but I would rather give the minutes to the young guys like Jones, Stillman, Kalynuk, Beaudan. Ottowa fans have expressed intrest in adding a vet dman on this site before so I picked them as my placeholder.

I think this was made with the brotherly sentiment in mind. Not the fact he would be a top 4 D man with the hawks.
