They don't have cap for another 6 mil defenseman, and they could do much better on a trade for those assets

More of a shot at Benning more than anything else. That said Pettersson is a cap dump and Zucker isn't going to fetch a ton in this cap world. A pick, cap space and improvement of D is likely as good as it gets.

I highly doubt that. Schmidt is overpaid and the pens don’t have the luxury of taking on another 6 million defenseman to just get in the way of POJ

Zucker isn't going to fetch much, and Schmidt would pair well with Poj. That still saves 4 million in cap

Pens only save 2.7 million in cap space with this trade given POJ replaces Pettersson. And no way in hell would they or should they ever try the Matheson-Marino pair ever again. That was a dumpster fire clusterf**k. POJ likely would be paired with Marino and Schmidt with Matheson giving the pens the most expensive 3rd pairing in the league. Schmidt is awful and a massive downgrade to Pettersson. Which says a lot based on how everyone piles on Pettersson here with a massive increase in contract.

Pens would be better off doing Pettersson for a pick if POJ is going to come up and play with Marino and using the cap space to find a solid 3rd pair RHD.
