1) Bridge both Petey and Hughes. They may get a bit more on 3 year deals, but overall the cap number will be lower than if they signed long term. The expiry of both Myers and Johnson's deals line up nicely with these contracts.
2) Cap/expansion trade with Tampa. It's no secret that TBL would love to shed Johnson's contract, and using Cal Foote as the sweetener to do it makes a ton of sense, as he's eligible to be selected in expansion and the Lightning already have several other Dmen to protect. VAN hopes Johnson can be a decent 3C and they get another young D to build around without giving up good future assets.
3) Expansion Protection List;
- Petey, Horvat, Boeser, Miller, Pearson, Lind, Motte
- Schmidt, Foote, Juolevi
- Demko
VAN hopes Seattle selects a larger salary (Myers, Holtby, Johnson, Virtanen), but they take MacEwen instead. Virtanen is bought out.
4) BOS trade; the Bruins are looking for LHD help and were rumored to be interested in OEL. Schmidt is much more affordable and giving up DeBrusk is a cheap acquisition cost. VAN hopes DeBrusk can be a solid top 9 contributor, but if not it's no big loss, as they've saved some money and term in the trade.
5) Re-signed Hamonic, Edler and Sutter to value deals to fill out the roster. If Edler and Sutter want more money or term they can find it elsewhere.
In summary, the team gets a little better, a little younger, and keeps all of their good picks and prospects to continue the rebuild.
Makes absolutely no sense to leave Foote unprotected. No Chance McDonagh is going to be selected with the term he has left . TB goes 4x4 4NMC's Point Cirelli Sergechev Cernak Foote

Kind of surprising, they'd lose Palat to Seattle for nothing then. I know they want to shed salary, but I assumed they'd want to keep Palat if they could.
To be honest, might as well buyout Holtby and sign a cheaper goalie like Broissoit.
I know Holtby wasn't great last year, but I think he could be just as good as Brossoit this year as a backup. I'm not a fan of the buyout cap penalties unless it's a no-brainer financially like Virtanen's.
And OEL isn't an $8.25M player, but apparently they're interested in him. And the acquisition cost would likely be higher for OEL. Just throwing out a cheaper option.

they aren't exactly interested in OEL they are interested in taking on OELs contract to get Garland. Big difference there. Also I'd rather let JD bounce back after covid and personal stuff ruined his season than ship him off to Vancouver for a ok D man making 6 mil.

Is that the rumor? That's an awefully huge contract to take on just to get Garland!

According to who? I haven’t seen a single thing indicating the bruins are interested.
I don't remember whether it was one of the TSN or Sportsnet "insiders".
I don’t think there has been anything credible ever. Just maybe some bloggers. Every time a player is reported to be available they generate something saying he’s headed to whatever team they cover, and get clicks. Bloggers stink.

Well, Holtbys buyout is 500,000 which is a lot better than keeping his 4.3 mil with below 900 save percentage. :/

Agreed about bloggers, but this was talked about by somewhat credible people at least. Whether it's actually true is a different story.

That’s the thing, i don’t think it was talked about by credible people, other than last year when OEL said he would only waive for boston and vancouver. Then nothing happened, probably because boston doesn’t have any interest in OEL.

Palat is easily replaced and helps with the cap. Killorn moves up. Ross Colton, Joseph and Barre-Boulet make the 4th line. Keeping Gourde would be a problem. He was great in the post season. Shut down line with Goodrow and Coleman...

Point is if you want to trade for him, you'll need to retain, just like ARI with OEL. Bruins can reject the trade and you keep Schmidt. VAN isn't the one who has the leverage.

They kicked tires on OEL last year but once ARZ said it wasn't willing to retain they walked away.
seeing how the reports are that they might protect cal foote over McDonagh I dont see them using him as a sweetner.
Vasi made of been the playoff MVP, but McDonagh was the MVP of the Finals. If they aren't protecting him, I can't see them losing him for nothing. And I think Francis would take him in a heartbeat.

they would or they trade him just reports i have heard.
