I tried to do this in an earlier post ... got pooped on for some of the deals I made. Here is a second go around that has the Sabres stockpiling picks while taking on bad contracts/flipping them for more picks/prospects.
This is the Oklahoma City Thunder model in the NBA. Acquire bad contracts for picks, rehabilitate/retain money, flip for picks, prospects, and more bad contracts. With the Sabres where they are and the cap space they'll have after moving guys out, it is a fun idea to toss around.
Additional information:
- Sabres draft defenseman Owen Power (Michigan) at 1OA, left wing/center William Elkund (Djargarden) at 3OA, and winger/center Kent Johnson (Michigan) at 9OA
- Sabres retain $5.75m total (leaves the cap at $1,155,833)
- Any of the guys that are on expiring deals/two years remaining can also be flipped at the deadline with Buffalo retaining cap as well (Subban, Neal, Compher, Miller, Eakin, etc.)
- Vilardi, Cozens, Mittelstadt, Krebs, Tuch, Dahlin, Jokiharju, Borgen, Wood, and the three top-10 picks are the key pieces to build around
- *Some of these players have NMC and for this exercise, they waive their NMC
