Description
The Edmonton Oilers definitely have the pieces to win the cup. McDavid and Draisatl are definitely the right core for cup winning, but they have not been able to surround them with the right pieces. Obviously, a goalie is an important one, and though Mike Smith had a great year, he shouldn't be being considered the guy for the future of this team and I think Edmonton needs to do something to shore-up their goaltending long-term, similarly to what Calagary did last free agency. I have the Oilers trading for John Gibson as he's a solid starter who's only 27 and locked up long-term therefore he makes sense for Edmonton. Obviously, Gibson likes Anaheim but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be open to being traded, especially because he open happiness with Anaheim makes me think that he's just a loyal person and doesn't want to run around chasing a cup. Obviously, the price for Gibson will be high, but I have the Oilers trading Broberg (because he's the younger of their two defense prospects and thus less likely to fit the timeline), Yamamoto and their first this year (because they no longer need to select Cossa with it.). This package is pretty big, Anaheim receives a pick and two young talents and Edmonton receives stability in net. Another problem with Edmonton is their depth, or more so the lack thereof. To fix this problem, I have them going out in free agency and signing three very solid free agents in Cizikas, Galchenyuk and Drake Caggiula, though they do lose Archibald in the XD. Caggiula especially is someone whom McDavid liked and could maybe take off a leadership burden. Finally, the Oilers have been reported multiple times as being frontrunners for Duncan Keith. I understand that Oilers fans are not huge fans of this but I'm proposing to take this negative and turn it into a positive by also getting Strome in this trade, who is someone who played very well with McDavid in junior. I also have Chicago retaing that way Keith is only being payed 3 million. In exchange Edmonton only has to give up Kahun's signing rights, Caleb Jones and a third, a very fair package for the leadership and experience Keith brings to the table and Strome's upside.

Edmonton declines both trades, especially the Anaheim one. Gibson has been replacement level since 2018, that's a huge overpay for a guy that isn't living up to his contract. Seriously, look at his numbers - you can get better goalies in free agency for less money and keep the 3 prime assets.

Don't let people fool you -- Ken Holland would push a peanut with his nose from Edmonton to Anaheim on his hands and knees over broken glass to get 6 years of John Gibson.

I think that you'd have to give us Evan Bouchard instead of Philip Broberg because we're quite set on LD and weak on RD.

I don't think edmonton trades any one of those pieces in the gibson trade. Archibald is likely protected.

Of 71 goalies who played at least 1250 minutes at 5v5 since December 31, 2018, Gibson ranks 49th for SV% and 47th for HDSV%... yet he carries the 6th highest cap hit!

It will be interesting to compare goalie stats between Anaheim and Edmonton in 2022. especially if Grubauer and Ullmark, the only two quality free agent goalies in this levee, escape your grasp.

I get that Gibsons stats are bad but I do think that that’s partially because he’s on a bad team. Before these past two years of Anaheim being miserable, Gibson was a top level goalie, which is what Edmonton is betting on in this trade. Even if Gibson can not reach those elite numbers again, it’s not a huge deal. Edmonton doesn’t need a world beater, they just need a solid goalie to with around 30-35 wins, 910 SVP and 2.5 GAA.

Why on earth would they give up THREE A+ assets for a $6.4M goalie that they HOPE will give them average results??? That's the stupidest thing I've read all week.
