No would should gift NYI cap room by taking Leddy and give up a 6th as opposed to taking picks to take him on.

Keeping them means we have to give up high picks to move other contracts . Leddy is replaceable and it makes sense to sell high on Varlamov.

not really, he has been a top 10 defensive defenseman in the league over the past 3 seasons and he can drive offense as well. One of the most underrated D in the league

Selling low on Varlamov too - Edmonton would jump at that.

Varly gets more than a 2nd and 3rd.

I'm not too sure about what you mean about "driving offense". He is not a productive d-man and doesn't play the PP.
    Top 10 defensive defenseman !?
I will strongly disagree with that

    He's solid d man but top 10?

And he missed the entire season to injury - I think with flat cap - he can be had for less than 3.

Move the second to a 2023 second and Edmonton accepts, not going through 3 straight drafts without a second rd pick

leddy is still a useful player on an expiring contract that a team can flip for assets at the deadline (especially if they retain 50% or add in another team to take on cap). i don’t think leddy yields a first or anything, but i have to think a team will at least jump on him for a sixth round pick, if not something slightly better.

Over the past 3 seasons Mccabe is in the top 10 in most defensive metrics including expected goals against per 60 (preventing quality shots against). This is while playing on an awful sabres team where most players have a negative impact defensively. He drives offense, meaning driving the puck from defense to offense, helps his team generate quality scoring chances. He does not have to play on the PP to be a great defenseman. I never said he was a top 10 defenseman overall, I'm saying in terms of defensive impact. He's a #3 Dman.

btw Adam Pelech was a Norris caliber defenseman this season and he didn't play on the PP.

Not sure if jake McCabe was lining up against other teams top lines, but maybe he was.
He is NOT a top 10 defensive defenseman - in this top 10 are we excluding other types of d men? what kind of list is this? It's misleading to prove your point.

I mentioned the PP because you mentioned that he drives offense - I think saying that is a miscategorizing what McCabe does -
    He isn't a productive-point producing D man -

Look, I see what you mean and the analytics your looking over - in terms of def. zone starts and having a relatively strong Corsi - he also doesn't play as many minutes as I thought just over 18 minutes.
He is in line with Edmundson and Chiarot, but with his injury and time with Sabres - I am not sure he gets that type of deal. Just my opinion.

McCabe plays against other teams top lines - how is saying he’s a top 10 defensive defenseman misleading? He has one of the best defensive impacts in the league over the last 3 seasons. He ranks top 10 in expected goals against , even strength defense GAR , and most shot suppression metrics - but he was average offensively in 2018-19 + 19-20 so clearly he’s not a top 10 D overall. He’s a very good 2nd pairing caliber D.

You don’t have to put up a ton of points to drive offense at a high level. Pelech ranked top 5 among all defenseman this season in driving offense, but he’s not a big point producer.

It would be great if he got under 3 mill, McCabe will provide excess value on any contract under 4 mill. This reminds of me of conversations I had about Devon Toews last offseason - a lot of isles fans were saying he was a 2nd pairing D, but analytics said he was an elite #1 D defenseman. Toews just finished 11th in Norris voting. Analytics can help exploit market inefficiencies , which is why I think it’s smart to sign McCabe even if it does cost 3 mill , his current AAV is 2.8 mill so im assuming he wants a slight raise.

If they did this, it'd be so weird in 2022 when they picked inside the top 75.
