Correct me if I’m wrong but paying Ottawa two 3rds to protect Dunn from Seattle is against the expansion draft rules.

Dunn is not the kind of d man the bruins need.

mcavoy wasn’t great on the PP this year, dunn could be their new PP1 qb, which also leaves more even strength minutes for mcavoy to take (his atoi won’t decrease but he’ll get more in other situations)

Mcavoy wasn’t on the first PP unit until the playoffs, at which point he was spectacular. 8 powerplay points in 11 games.

Seattle would just take Dunn instead
OTT could protect Dunn with Chabot and Mete or Zaitsev
OTT expose Mete but it’s worth 2 picks IMO
If Seattle claims Mete, then they got 2 3rd round picks for someone they got via Waivers

I don’t know, but why would it be against the rule ? OTT trade for Dunn before the expansion draft, protect Chabot Zaitsev Dunn and expose Mete instead. After the expansion draft, they trade Dunn vs DeBrusk and the pick. The 3 GMs talked to each other before the expansion draft. Because Boston couldn’t protect Dunn because of McAvoy Carlo and Grzelcyk

Technically it couldnt be a 3 way trade because it would have to go down as multiple transactions based. on the fact that you have trades at different times.

Trade 1 would be Ottawa getting Dunn and a 3rd for future considerations? As well as a 3rd for future considerations? (dont think either of these get approved)
Ottawa protects Dunn in the expansion draft. (nothing wrong here)
Then the Sens would be trading Dunn to Boston for Debrusk. (this would get approved)
Finally Ottawa trades Debrusk to St. Louis for future considerations.

I'll try to find something to actually back up this weird feeling I have about this idea but I dont think we've seen anything like this because its really just circumventing the expansion draft. Multiple trades going sending significant assets for nothing is a red flag to the league. Even if you wanted to, you cant give good players away for free. Ruins the integrity of the league, theyd block the transaction for sure.

I mean future considerations is just taken as nothing nowadays, I’m pretty sure it used to mean something (i.e. the team receiving future considerations decides that they’ll take X player or pick at a future date), so that’s all this means. DeBrusk 3 days later is the “future consideration.” Also, one of the teams is still using an expansion draft protection spot on the guy so it seems like it might be a loophole (most teams would just pay seattle to not take dunn, but if ottawa offers their protection spot for cheaper than seattle charges to avoid dunn, then it makes sense to involve them if there’s no specific rule against it).

Honestly I’ve been looking and I’m not sure if I’m just looking in the wrong places but I haven’t found anything explicitly saying that you can’t do something like this BUT the only thing that I think could be a problem if this did go through is the gentleman’s agreement for Ottawa to do as agreed upon isnt in writing.

I don’t think GMPD would do this but technically he could decide to keep Dunn/Debrusk and the two 3rds haha

We saw Florida wanting Hoffman from Ottawa but Ottawa didn’t want to send Hoffman to a division rival
So Wilson called FLO GM at the time to trade for Hoffman and after trading him to FLO
But I doubt Dorion would do that lol
Like Wilson could have keep Hoffman lol

Okay true but that was a lot closer to PD’s worst day as a GM than a 3 way trade. Ottawa got FLEECED. So SJ got a 2nd, 4th, and two 5th for giving away a cap dump, a 6th and a 7th. Ottawa got a bad contract and a 6th. Florida got their man.

PD took less from a west coast team because he wanted to send Hoff as far away as possible and left value on the table to do so. Just for Wilson to turn around and trade Hoff exactly where he wasn’t supposed to go. Also led to a ridiculous conditional pick in the Karlsson trade haha

But if anything it just highlights that gm’s will do whatever they can to make their team better. Wilson definitely could’ve kept Hoffman and he still would’ve won the trade, but I promise you at no point PD was aware that the SJ FLA trade was coming. He could not have looked more stupid 🤦🏽‍♂️
