Solid plan but with the extra cap get a better 3rd line and bring back Smith instead of McElhinney

That would be a very interesting off-season and a very busy one for the Oilers. I don't think they would be able to generate that much Free Agency business.

Welcome to CapFriendly!

You have $9,3 million in cap space. Neal's buyout is $1,916,667 for each of four years. (Unlike many other buyouts, it doesn't vary from season to season.) Wouldn't it be better to have $7.4 million in cap space and those high-tier draft picks?

Detroit takes Neal with the picks but not koskinen, not paying for him. Even for free not sure Ottawa takes turris or Russell.

Are these trades part of the Make A Wish Foundation?
OTT absolutely declines both offers.
DET would be nuts to touch either of those deals.
BUF declines.
Interested to know how you're approaching the expansion draft because Seattle likely takes Jones if you go 7-3-1.

Staal with a cap hit $5.7M was worth a 2nd. So 2 2nds for Neal is fair but as mentioned above by OldNYIFan the buyout makes more sense.

Staal also filled a need on Detroit blueline. There's no need for Neal so the cost would be more. There's just no chance Yzerman is touching that contract (or any high priced multi year term dump) without a high end future asset coming back.

Staal was a cap dump, yes. But he was also brought in to play a role and played just under 19 mins/game for Detroit last year. Neal can't provide value like that. He also has 2 years left when Staal only had one. He's a pure cap dump and it would cost more to get someone to eat that contract.

A first should be the very least Edmonton is willing to give up to get rid of Neal.

Even then I still think the buyout makes more sense it's only $1.9M for 4 seasons.
