Sign-and-trade. CAR signs Hamilton to an 8-year, $70M contract, and moves him immediately to TOR. Canes receive Kerfoot, a pick and a prospect as compensation for agreeing to a sign-and-trade. The transaction also involves a pending UFA swap with Rielly and Trocheck, as it would position wise help each team in terms of ExD, and would fill some gaps too.

This transaction gets done before the Expansion draft.

How is moving a walking UFA and a 2C for a first pair D, mid-6 F and future assets "terrible"?

I have my doubts that Buffalo would give up Olofsson, certainly not without more than one piece coming back. If you’re going to give up your two best offensive players already you probably should not give up the third one too.

It’s one ufa for another ufa. Kerfoot doesn’t really do anything for the canes apart from being a depth winger. The canes would then have to go find a second line center again which they had been looking for for years before getting trochek.

Trocheck and Rielly have the exact same terms.

If both Hamilton leaves as UFA and Skjei gets claimed by Kraken, your D is left with significantly bigger holes than your offense.

Difference is that you have the forwards to replace the hole of moving Trocheck creates in Necas for example, but you have no such D-men to fill the aforementioned gaps.

And there aren't really any better options in free agency. But once again, there is some forwards able to net you a forward. In this case it's Saad. He could very well take Necas' former role.

I'm willing to bet CAR is better off moving Trocheck to fill the holes in that defense if it brings them a top pair D-man. And gaining some relatively good assets for a D-man who's most likely walking considering that CAR has already given him permission to negotiate with other teams is smart asset management if you ask me.

You could always garner something like a third rounder for Hamilton's rights in the draft but if you ask me, Kerfoot+Hållander+2nd is a better haul than that for virtually no cost.

On paper it might sound foolish. But if you look a little bit deeper, there's lots to win here for Canes too.

I guess the big thing comes down to necas has shown nothing to say that he is ready to take over as a 2c. I’m also assuming that Reilly will walk in a year and he is coming off a poor season. Personally I’d rather sign Martinez in this case and keep trochek

I agree Martinez is your best bet should he hit free agency, but I think Vegas is keeping the guy.

I don't know why Rielly would walk considering Canes is one of the most potential teams down for success in the long run. But I suppose it all comes down to what kind of money he's after.

The Rielly trade is interesting but there are a few issues.

The reason Toronto would trade him is if they can't extend him. So I doubt they would trade him for another rental.

Dougie Hamilton on an 8 year deal probably means about $1M in cap savings. What exactly is that worth? Kerfoot, Hallander and a 2nd. I'm not sure.

Another reason why they'd trade him is to shake up that core a bit. Those 4 forwards are pretty much immovable, but Rielly makes an interesting piece for negotiations.

At the end of the day, they can't continue fully on exactly how they've been doing for the last five years as it's not leading to anything apparently.

They really, really like Rielly. Also, Rielly has never disappointed in the playoffs.

If they really wanted a shakeup, I think it'll happen with someone else.

I would say that the canes want someone who can actually perform night in and night out. That is trocheck and not Reilly. They are both going to be pending UFAs in the same year. If the canes really want him we wait a year and possibly get him for free. Why waste assets by sending them to a terrible leafs team when you could use those same assets to get someone, I don’t know, who is not in a really big losing culture. Trocheck would stay in Carolina and actually have a shot at a Stanley Cup rather than go to Toronto only to be knocked out in the first round. Reilly also doesn’t fit what the canes need. If Hamilton leaves we will need a top pairing RHD not a LHD. I would much rather just snag Barrie from EDM to possibly replace Dougie, and not even have to lose any assets in the process.

Just a thought but if Reilly never disappoints in the playoffs why are the Habs in the cup final, possibly about to win the cup (doubtful but maybe) and the leafs are incapable of moving past a single round? That’s sounds a little disappointing to me, but I digress.

Ask Leafs fans, they know Barrie is not the guy you count on when it comes to winning or losing that all-important game.

He was useless there. And he didn't exactly shine in EDM in the playoffs either. But he played a regular season good enough to definitely get someone overpay for him.

McDavid didn’t exactly shine in the playoffs either if I remember correctly. He also had a really good regular season. All I would be looking for in a replacement role for Hamilton would be someone who can somewhat match his offensive production. Preferably they can also be defensively reliable. That’s one reason savard would be a better acquisition. He can produce, albeit not as much as Hamilton but he might play a better defensive game than Hamilton.

Barrie is not exactly known as a defensive D-man. He's more known as a dictionary definition of an offensive D.
