Description
This is mostly an exercise to glean information that I'm not clear about . . . How far can the "Future Considerations" transactions be stretched? . . . And if executed correctly, could a team circumvent losing assets, or further protect them, in the upcoming Expansion Draft, by way of this type of trade??

Curious for feedback, but kindly don't worry so much about the players involved as much as how the transaction(s) play out. Whether teams can effectively trade this way or not (rules?), at the very least it's an intriguing idea! It's basically a "Player To Be Named Later" kind of deal that other leagues have utilized, and I have no idea if there is language in the CBA, etc. that prohibits such . . . . .

      Détails additionnels:
Winnipeg is essentially trading a player they fear they may lose in Seattle expansion, and by utilizing "Future Considerations", acquire a defenseman at a later date, ensuring they have no concerns protecting him.

Again, I have NO IDEA whether there are specific rules prohibiting just such a transaction. If anyone KNOWS one way or another, please do tell!

Theoretically at least I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t make a trade with Seattle for the player that they selected from you. I’m not sure that’s against the rules, or if there are any rules about that sort of thing. I would say there’s nothing preventing teams from making post expansion draft trades with Seattle.

Actually, what I laid out here are trades between Buffalo and Winnipeg that essentially "protects" the players involved from Seattle taking them. I do believe there are rules against Seattle trading the players they select back to the team they selected from.

Seems like it would just be easier to make an arrangement directly with Seattle.

Except that any arrangement with Seattle will likely involve sacrificing additional assets.

I guess what I'm proposing with this fake trade is the idea of 2 teams striking a deal that not only benefits their roster but also helps them against certain losses in the expansion draft. In this example, Winnipeg can't risk adding a defenseman pre-expansion, and they also have to choose between Copp or Appleton, in most opinions. In this situation Buffalo would really be helping Winnipeg out a lot, in all honesty, so they should probably get more out of the deal! But it was just an example, the first I could come up with!! And I am curious to know if teams could pull this off if the deals were constructed the right way! (?)

I don't think there's anything illegal about your premise, but there would be nothing preventing Adams from telling Cheveldayoff to kick rocks after the expansion draft when Winnipeg comes asking for their "future considerations".

True. Deals like these would definitely hinge on a fair amount of trust, for sure! Which is why I included the conditional 2nd rounder. (Considered making it a first to really hold him to his word!)

You might be better off trying to make a deal with Vegas. Winnipeg needs to shelter a player they're afraid to lose from Seattle, while Vegas is looking to gain some cap space. Vegas is exempt from the expansion draft, while Winnipeg has some wiggle room with the cap (relative to Vegas at least). Trade a player to Vegas for a couple weeks, then Vegas can return him to Winnipeg along with a cap dump or cap favorable player swap.

Intriguing! Hmmm . . . Curious if there are any rules against reacquiring players, but definitely some creative thinking. cheers

There are rules against re-acquisition if salary retention is involved. In other words, Vegas couldn't trade a player to Winnipeg, then have Winnipeg immediately send him back to Vegas with 50% salary retained. Aside from that, there's no rules against trading a player back to the same team that just traded him.

The repercussions would be that no gm would make a trade with future considerations with Adam’s ever again, the news would definitely get spread around the league.

Sure, but how often do future considerations trades actually happen? Also, after the recent happenings in Buffalo, how long do we really expect Adams to have a GM job?
