The last thing the pens need is a LHD making 7+ million per year long term. And they sure as hell aren’t paying an arm and a leg for Arizona’s cap dump.

He’s a top 4 d on a great contract. Just because the trolls that don’t watch the pens parrot what those that need a whipping boy claim doesn’t mean Pettersson isn’t a top 4 d. I’ll believe his stats before I take what the trolls believe lol

      Henrique at full cap? I’d say a 3rd and 5th. Steel has a little value but he’s struggled and while Henrique’s contract isn’t perfect he’s still a quality middle 6 C who’s continued a 20g 82 game pace.

I've crapped on the idea of adding Reilly because of finances and how many LD's they have, but this is a different situation. This is a situation where if the Pens could find a way to trade Matheson almost completely off the books, you do it. OEL is an elite offensive dman who's a big body and plays physical. Basically a Hextall/Burke wet dream.

Now, if AZ would take Matheson instead that would make life easier since Pettersson is much easier to move. I'd even be willing to give AZ more if they'd take Matheson.

Yeah I just thought of that. Arizona takes Matheson and maybe Pitt sends Pettersson to Seattle

      I propose a new idea...

TO AZ: Jarry, Matheson, 2022 1st, Poulin (or Legare if you prefer)
TO PIT: Kuemper + OEL ($1M retained)

And honestly, so many people crap on Matheson, but he was very good for us. Yeah, his contract tough, but he's proved when used right he can be very effective.

I like it, and I like the Penguins blockbuster discussed above, but the off-season isn’t quite done IMO. Either Pitlick or Fischer will be gone to Seattle so keep Crouse, don’t think Soderstrom is ready just yet and I would be wary of slotting Capobianco in there right away unless he comes to camp a different player. I want him to be good so bad but he hasn’t found a way to make it work in the NHL yet. I would say they need at least 1 more NHL defenseman, probably 2. I like Jensen and Dermott as targets especially if they’re able to restock picks like they’re doing here

Only one who is a possibility is Goligoski because he played great down the stretch and was a mentor of sorts for Chychrun

OEL has hardly been elite offensively the past two seasons. And that 8 million cap hit (7 million when retained) is a burden for a cap strapped team like the pens. It’d take more than just losing Matheson’s contract. And no way should they trade Legare or Poulin. Talk about big bodies who are physical and can score. Let’s trade away the guys who’d be on entry level contracts for an 8 million dollar defenseman for the next 6 years. That’s not the recipe for success. That’s a recipe for disaster.

OEL gave AZ a trade list.
      PIT is not on it.
      That ends the whole conversation.

Poulin and Legare are not making the club this season and by the time they're ready to help the Pens the window is probably closed. They need a good one to two years in WBS before they make the jump.

I also said it take more than moving Matheson. I said they'd have to move both Pettersson and Matheson which is a huge task, but this is the situation you do it for.

What makes Poulin and Legare not ready? They’ve dominated in the Q. They don’t need another year in juniors. They are just going to dominate the ahl. Why waste a year of their contracts? The years we won the cups we had the young guys who were hungry come up and be big pieces. Pens fans are a fickle bunch and even though it was young guys that were major pieces to winning the last two cups, refuse to use our young pieces lol. I mean those are 2 entry level contracts that will use up the majority of the flat cap years. It makes no sense bringing in 7+ million contracts and putting ourselves into a position where we can’t upgrade at the TDL and destroy our depth because we have to get rid of so many semi high priced items to bring in a higher priced luxury item.
Arizona is simply stuck with OEL unless they are willing to retain half and take a loss.

The Q is absolutely no competition for them and in no way prepares them for the NHL. They need a year or two in WBS to get up to NHL speed. The Q is a very bad gauge.

Then why ever draft or sign prospects from the Q? They should just get rid of the league if it’s that bad and every prospect needs a year or 2 in the ahl after before getting to the nhl lol. They are ready. The ahl is just a bunch of stiffs too. They aren’t going to learn anything playing ahl journeymen who are just as bad, if not worse, than prospects in the Q and just older prospects who graduated from the Q and other junior leagues.
