Description

Boy the comments for this will be brutal.This is a complete hypothetical. I doubt the nhl would even allow this to happen just thought it would be interesting. Instead of trading Jack Eichel, the Sabres raffle him off.

How it would work:

the sabres tell each team that they give say their 4th or 5th best prospect or young player and they have an equal chance of getting jack eichel in a draw as every other team who enters. Say 20 teams do it, each team has a 5% chance of getting eichel.

Why would teams do this? For buffalo, you are probably losing any eichel trade anyways. This allows you to get an absurd amount of B prospects. For other teams, you have the chance of getting jack eichel for 1/10th of a penny on the dollar.

I'll list an example of each teams prospect they would give up. But this should also interest teams like Colorado who would normally never be in on Eichel to have a chance at him. If I was running a contender and I had a 5% chance of getting a top 5 center in the league you have to do that right? A rebuilding team like Anaheim has the chance to kickstart their rebuild without destroying their prospect pool. Obviously almost everyone who enters wont win and will lose a prospect, but I think the idea of losing a middle of the pack prospect for a small chance at Jack Eichel would entice a lot of teams

I totally agree, teams are not going to give away players they hope to build around. Anyone who thinks teams will trade any prospect who makes the lineup every night is wrong. Buffalo wants to build around prospects they can develop themselves, not prospects who have already been brought up into another team. All of these options are legit trading possibilities. This is probably the only post that features actual trading assets both teams will agree on.

This is absolutely the most brilliant out-of-the-box idea I've ever seen on CapFriendly. Of course, the NHL wouldn't permit it, but as long as we're dreaming, how about this amendment:

to prevent teams from putting a turd in the pool, give Buffalo the right to reject the proffer.

This would have the effect of elevating the class of the draw, because now teams would be afraid that they'd be shut out if their entry weren't of sufficient quality.

You can only have so many contracts and nhl rostered players, a lot of these guys would end up on the market anyway. I just see this as a ROR deal the whole league gets in on it wouldn't make the sabres any better.

Let’s make it really funky and stagger odds based on Buffalo’s view of the prospect. Top 5 players offered per Buffalos estimation gets 10% odds, 10 teams get 5% odds and the rest get punished for offering up ****. Would be hilarious. I love your raffle idea.
