Détails additionnels:
It's simple.

Forget about paying a 1st to dump Tyler Johnson.

Just buy him out and rip off the band-aid already.

You can thank him for his services to all the glorious cup runs over the years.

Geez :D

In what world is giving Johnson 10M and loosing Palat a better option than just dumping Johnson?

Also, neither Goodrow or Coleman would sign that.

Dumping Johnson would require spending a 1st and Palat is a pending UFA next year.

Also, getting a 2nd back for losing Palat in the expansion draft when you're in a bind is not the end of the world.

The 1st would be better spent getting a good quality player that's cheap and that would make a difference.

I've made posts about how Ottawa can help out in that regard.

If they win the cup again, Goodrow and Coleman absolutely sign team-friendly deals in sunny low-tax Tampa, Florida.

The Goodrow and Coleman contracts are too far below market value for sunshine and taxes to make up for, especially when a team further south may be bidding for their services as well.

As for the buyout, it's certainly an option, but 6 years of dead cap with a flat cap for an uncertain amount of time is suboptimal.

I had Coleman priced in the neighbourhood of Andrew Mangiapane of the Calgary Flames and Denis Gurianov of the Dallas Stars.

I had Goodrow priced in the neighbourhood of Nick Paul of the Ottawa Senators.

How far off am I exactly?

The buyout of Tyler Johnson is to eliminate the need to pay a 1st round pick just to dump him.

The 1st would be better spent on bringing in a quality player next year IMO.

I think Goodrow will pull at least $2m and Coleman at least $3.5m. Teams will probably be lining up for their services and there will probably be an overpayment in both of their futures.

I'm comfortable with our prospect pool to replace any pieces we lose in free agency. If the 1st gets full cap relief then I'd do it, if it takes quite a bit more than I'd probably go buyout.
