Taking bad contracts results in 8 1st rounders in 2 years

Description
Most of the bad contracts expire in the next 2 years, BOB is a hefty one to take on but the return makes it worth contemplating.

Team could possibly squeeze into the playoffs next year in their weak division, if not they have some assets they can flip at next few deadlines.

With 8 first rounders in the next two years, and 2022 is supposed to be a strong draft class, the team is set up for future success.

Isles put Boychuk on LTIR so there's no cap issues for NYI, and he seems to have a job lined up for him when he "retires", so him getting traded is likely not going to happen.

If you want to take Ladd instead, that can be arranged. Ladd, a 1st and a 4th for you to take Leddy or Varlamov in the Expansion Draft.

You've overestimated the value of dumping many of these players.
Boychyuk is not a bad contract at all....as long as he stays on LTIR which he is.

Why get up 3 1sts (including an outstanding prospect in Lundell), when you can just buy him out in a year or two (Or 3?). They're going to need a second goalie next year regardless, so they might as well keep him for another year or two. The buyout is actually pretty affordable.

I'm of two minds 🤔

Yeah the Bob contract is absolutely horrendous

It's holding them back from another level entirely

But Lundell is pretty similar value to Kaapo Kakko

And that '22 1st of theirs could be very interesting

If I were them I'd use B assets to unload but not A

Also the Bob buyout is surprisingly decent

Florida is essentially giving up an A+ prospect, and two likely late 1st round picks, one of which is in a extremely unpredictable draft, to rid themselves of the second most expensive goaltender in the NHL who will be a backup to Knight for the next 5 seasons, and is owed a significant amount of money. The team is in contention now and will have to pay Barkov and huberdeau after next season, assuming they sign with FLA both will be 10 million plus players. Add to it, Florida seems to always be a team where every dollar has to count and I think this deal makes sense, Marleau cost a 1st for one year when there wasn’t a flat cap.

There are no real issues brought on by his contract, we can easily just buy him out in a few years
No reason to give up a significant portion of our future to get rid of a non-issue
Our goalie tandem is essentially 11 million dollars, not bad when you think about it

When it comes to Barkov and Huberdeau, they've actually got the perfect set up leading up to those contracts right now, if the players want to stay.

Barkov extension year: Stralman/Nuti become UFA's, clearing over $8 mil in space (They've only got $46 mil commited to that season right now).
Huberdeau extension year: Yandle/Hornqvist become UFA's, blearing $11.65 mil in space (They've only got $17.5 commited to that season right now, which includes Bob).

Obviously they'll make additions, and will have a bunch of players to sign, but bumping each of Barkov and Huberdeau over $10 mil (If that's what it ends up taking) isn't going to screw the team cap wise. Zito did an excellent job reducing the teams cap last offseason.

Good points backed up by numbers, I can appreciate that! I guess I look at it from a “Will they have a better opportunity to win it then next year?” perspective. With AB and JH being on team friendly deals the extra 10 million in cap space could put then in an even better spot than they currently are, especially with how low FA’s were signing for last season.
This will probably be their only chance to completely wipe the contract without having to take back bad contracts in return, and value wise I feel like that would be around the cost to do so, if Seattle is even willing to take that contract on. It obviously has long term consequences though, that is a lot of young talent to give up!
I get it from both perspectives.
I appreciate the mature discussion!

Cheers man!

I think I look at it from the "What's the Panthers system look like right now vs. after they make that trade?" perspective too. It's not great right now (It's OK), and would be a barren wasteland after.

I definitely don't disagree that Seattle is in a great position to take advantage of a lot of cap strapped teams though. You could absolutely make an argument that they're even better off than Vegas was.

Ya I thought that was a pretty reasonable ask for dumping that contract. If your worried about the dressing room, you could find better 4th liners who are good in the room for significantly less cap, heck you could almost pay a full 4th line of guys that are good in the room for his cap.

Of course this trade would only make sense if Calgary figures they are a playoff team next year, I figure they think they are.

Possible something could be worked out there, that is a significant amount of combined cap to take, but interesting counter proposal!

Yeah to be honest I don't expect a deal like that to happen, but one can dream. The Expansion Draft is the perfect opportunity for NYI to lose cap space, which is why I prefer a trade where Seattle takes on salary than then claiming someone like Bellows, Dal Colle, Koivula, or Aho.
