Savard is worse than Gardiner, yet you're paying Seattle to take Gardiner and actively employing Savard...?

Also, you're not getting Nolan Patrick for Hamilton extended. Philadelphia can just offer that in free agency, the entire point of the sign and trade would be an 8 year deal.

I get the concept but the Dougie deal would be an 8 yr one. That’s the main point of the sign and trade.

Also - at this point you can just re-sign Dougie with the cap space you have and the money you spent on Savard. I’d say that’s money well spent versus taking a huge downgrade defensively.

Because he is complimentary piece not a core piece. Take Slavin away and he is middle pair defender. The team wants to pay him like Krug not like Pietrangelo (who is a better defender). Also years 6-8 will undoubtedly be a cap suck.

You will be lucky to get a 3rd for compensation in a sign and trade. Honestly, if i'm the Flyers, I am fine with just signing the 7 year deal and not giving the Canes anything. That takes Hamilton until he is 34 and who knows what type of decline could happen by then.

Don't think there's any Flyers fans/Fletcher who wouldn't take 7 years over 8, but Hamilton is going to be heavily coveted and it may take a little extra discomfort to guarantee acquiring him. This package is too much, but if Carolina's ask is a 1st and if we didn't pull the trigger on that then it would be highly likely he'd end up somewhere else... lets just say there are WAY worst ways to spend a 1st round pick than bringing in a top 5 RHD in hockey for 8 years

I agree that getting Hamilton is huge but at the price of 13OA for what is basically his rights is where I become hesitant. CAR should not be getting TDL type of returns when they let their guy become a UFA. If we want to give them a 2nd or trade a conditional pick so be it but not a top 15 1st.

This is a bit different than getting his rights. The idea here is that even if Philly wants his rights they can't extend him for 8 years. Only Carolina can do that and supposedly Dougie wants an 8 year deal. If the Flyers traded for his rights that wouldn't guarantee acquiring him, in this scenario he would already be extended before being acquired

Yes but there is no way Carolina should get much for doing this. At this point they are merely the facilitator. IMO a 3rd is the most they should receive. Or they can piss off Dougie and have 0 chance at re-signing him themselves, which I believe they still would want to do.
