I know it's a terrible trade to begin with but comparing matthews to Larkin, and then robertson, a first and a second to svechnikov is way worse than this

Detroit's not trading the only legit Top 6 center in their organization, and definitely not for a package like this.

Yeah he might because he'll get to play in Toronto's loaded top 6, but that won't make him a better or more valuable player than Larkin

‘Could’ is the key word in your sentence. Sure Larkin has been inconsistent since joining the league, but a proven NHLer will almost always have more value than an unproven prospect of the similar caliber. Plus, go take a look at Detroit’s center depth. Value for value the trade isn’t terrible (if it was me I still wouldn’t do it), but we are not trading our top Center who would be a great second line center on most of the winning teams.

I wouldn't be to worried about that happening Robertson already well behind Larkin's pace. The only AHL games Larkin played were playoff games after leaving U of M and at 19 Larkin had 23g - 22a - 45p. Robertson who is 19 spent most of the season in the AHL.

“So you get something for him”. Is there a more tired phrase on CF. COL will expose Graves in XD AND not trade him unless they are offered something of worth to them. A 2nd rd pick in 2 years isn’t worth a lot to a team chasing the cup.

Petan or Malgin. Robertson is still an unknown at the NHL level. Too small of a sample size.

or because robertson is that good. what's larkin's excuse mantha/vrana, bertuzzi, fabri, zadina not good enough for him? is he someone who needs to be carried. why would the leafs want to give up that bounty for a passenger.

inconsistent and regressing. sure robertson's not a sure thing but i'd rather gamble on him, a bunch of picks, and $6m in cap space over larkin. no thanks to larkin, i'd rather avoid him all together. not to mention the leafs don't need him. he'd be a 3c here.

They have to lose someone. Graves is honestly the easiest to replace. Sakic has gone on record he isn’t going to make a trade that doesn’t help this current team. How does a 2nd rd pick in two years help the current team?

They got Toews for 2 2nd rounders.

Yeah and the Islanders had to trade him. That they took advantage of the Isles cap situation and made a good trade doesn’t mean they turn around and make a bad trade.

I'm not advocating for this trade (although I do think they should move Graves prior to expansion). Just pointing out that future 2nd or 3rd round picks are valuable to have for cup contending teams. Allows you to make deadline acquisitions.

But then they lose 2 roster players because of the XD. I don’t disagree a 2nd is a valuable asset particularly in 2022 where it’s a deeper draft and they don’t have a 2nd. But a more ideal trade is an exempt player that is a roster piece.

Personally I think they should move Graves and then lose Compher to expansion. Compher can be replaced internally or cheaper via free agency or allows them to bring back Saad. I think the cap flexibility of clearing 6.6m would be more beneficial especially if you get a decent return for Graves. I wouldn't do it for a 2nd but maybe a 2nd and 3rd or 2nd and prospect.
