More cap evasion

Description
Without resigning a single player, Tampa is down 4.2 in cap space already, here’s priorities they need to do:
- Pay futures, whatever it takes to get Johnson off the team to Seattle, pay the price
- (Step 2 little out there) but you package McD with a top prospect, and go for a top player, requesting a trade, with 1 year remaining on his deal.

As for free agent signings, tell Paquette to come back on a league min team still going all in for Stanley cup, he’d be stupid to say no. Kulikov, all Russians like Florida, third pairing, shutdown defencemen, perfect fit. Colton takes a Verhaghe like deal.

Why is Columbus retaining on Jones? He's a FA at the end of the year. You're basically just trading for first crack at signing him.

Actually that does make some sense if the offer yields a better return.

This trade has a few flaws. One of which is there is nothing that is worth the Jackets trading him there much less for that return which is awful. Second the Jackets are going to be stingy with their picks. They need to restock the pipeline. Lastly, McD has a no trade clause which I am sure he is not going to waive it to go to Columbus.

How so? If Columbus doesn't trade him he leaves anyways they get nothing. I just can't see them retaining on a guy who's contract is already ending.

A team that feels Jones is the last piece that can get them a Stanley Cup may want to add him, but if they don’t have the cap room, they will add more to the trade if the Jackets retain so they can fit him under the cap.

There is no cap right now and as far as I know that 10% cap increase doesn't kick in until the pre-season. So teams can take on as much salary as they want from now until then they just have to get cap compliant before the season starts. I'm not sure how Columbus pays their players but I know somes pay them monthly, bi-monthly etc. At this point I'm just guessing but he's got like a million dollars left to be paid to him (roughly) He may already have been paid in full by now for all I know. So retaining on him seems kind of pointless when it doesn't affect anything at all. Know what I mean?
